    Mud motor size?

Curious to hear from any duck hunters on here. What hp would be best for a 14ft flat bottom usually going to be 1-2 guys in boat. My buddy has a 20hp go devil but it really weighs down the back of the boat due to the size. I found a 9hp but don't think would get me going very quick with 2 guys in the boat. Still pretty new to this. Educate me.

My 27Hp longtail on a 14ft john boat only gets about 18mph with just me. When we load it down it seems like about 12-13 mph, but I never clocked it loaded.

Id get a 20hp and put pods on the back of the boat.

I have a 35hp on a 20ft boat because that was the biggest they made back then. Im pretty sure if i had 2 motors i might could go 30mph lol.

My boat is stupid heavy. But 4-5 people can be in it bow fishing with no problems.

Yea I looked at pods also as a good option, really appreciate the responses, most likely going to try to find a 20hp. My boats pretty light but loaded down with 2 guys and gear I'd like to be able to get across the water at a decent speed lol

Sounds like you realize a bigger boat would be better, especially since you are mentioning open lake. Mud motors are heavy.

Not sure about long tail motors but for a surface drive mud motor I would look at the 23hp copperhead for your boat. I don't personally have any experience with them but have heard the guys on mudmotortalk.com mention them to others for smaller rigs.

The first surface drive motor built under under 9 Horsepower

Not really big open water, where I go it just has a few places where it opens up for 200-500 yards or so. Its a decent size 14ft boat little wider then most.

Mud Buddy also makes a "Mini". Only weights 165lbs.

This mini mud motor balances power and price like a true king of the backwater. Ideal for smaller budgets and smaller duck boats. Great for marsh, open water, and vegetation water conditions.

I did look into those, good looking motors. Looking more for a used longtail, a surface drives going to be a bit out of budget

But, to answer your original question, MM's aren't really built for speed unless you go big and/or mod them out. They are made though to get you places most all other boats can't get to.....

I must've missed the long tail only.

Long tails definitely are not built for speed.

I would find something between 15-20hp of the weight allows
