    Well that was EXCITING!!

Just wrapped up the last quail hunt of the season. FINALLY got to hunt the back portion of the pasture today. It had either been to wet to drive to from snow or I couldn't get away from the house. Covey 20-30 birds solid, and pretty tight holding. They got wise pretty quick, erupting on the backside of cedar or thick mesquites. Scratched out 7 and lost another 4 or 5.

Dog got solid points and picked up all except the knocked down runners

The exciting part happened when I got home & grabbed my bird vest which had sat in my passenger seat for the 30 min ride home. As I lifted it, a very much still alive quail popped out & began scurrying about the inside of my cab!!!
Managed to capture it and ring it's little neck!

Good wrap up to the season. This place is a dream come true. It's about 5 miles of Pasture that winds along the caprock, some not 30 feet wide, some a few hundred yards wide. Plenty of quail, 30 mins from the house, and all for the fair price of a handshake!

What I used to do was send the dog back out and pop the head - throw it in a bush - hold the bird upside down for 5 to 10 seconds - and then put it in the bag.
Got serious about Turkeys for 20ish years and had to up my game big time. No dog just me and the bird.......

        Sounds like a great trip.............

We busted 6 or 7 coveys today, a couple just 5-7 birds, but at least 4 that were 20+. Cool thing was all the big coveys were stacked along the last 600 yards of pasture. It was flanked by cut milo. Had some on the edge of the milo and some in the thick cover! Great day, been along time since I have seen coveys rise like that
