    Nacagdoches Hunting

Have an opportunity in Nacagdoches but just can't convince myself to move from South Texas to East Texas. Place has a lot of opportunity. Great pics of previous deer and deer on cam. Blinds, feeders and food plots established.

    Thoughts?

Faith is a big deal. I'd say listen to your gut. South Texas is a dream for many, but east Texas offers different challenges, and oh those hidden gems that you'll see. Beautiful country too.

If you don't have any experience hunting in East Texas, you are probably going to be frustrated coming from South Texas. Deer don't just start showing up when you corn senderos in East Texas. It's harder hunting, and you won't see as many deer. But East Texas is growing some really nice deer the last few years (I think a lot can be contributed to the antler restrictions). Look for creeks with white oaks, old logging roads you can corn, stuff like that. They rut earlier in East Texas too (typically around Halloween until Thanksgiving in my area)

Coming from S Texas to E Texas, you'll have to change your tactics. E. Texas makes folks better hunters, and there's great opportunity.

I hunt San Augustine which is really close to Nacogdoches. I have been on this lease for 5 years and love it. It's beautiful country and a good amount of deer. Like others have said though, it is a lot more challenging than South Texas.

If those are recent pictures I would do it in a heartbeat.

Maybe if you can swing both this year it would be easier to make up what you like better ..

Looking at those pictures tells me you're looking at the Hayter Club on Lake Nacogdoches. Excellent hunting for this area but for what they charge you can find better hunting other parts of Texas. Really depends on what you're looking for, if you want more of a challenge then go for it! What's the quality of hunting like on your place down south?

There's a big difference between getting these deer on camera and getting one on the ground.. Pictures tell you they are there but doesn't mean you'll get one. I'd ask them for ldps opposed to just trail cam pictures

In East Texas you can walk your property and see sign everywhere. Put a cam out and then see nothing. Heck my cousin saw a lot of free pig sign recently. Put a trap out in a slew type area and hasn't caught one.

I had a lease outside of Nac for 5 years. I took one doe. You were lucky to see a dozen deer all season. It is hunting, but it is hard hunting but you need skill and a ton of luck.

Depends on how the place is treated. I hunt in the county and was gladly making the drive from San Antonio (even though I had a place to hunt 30 minutes from SA).

Pm sent. If you do choose to get on there, check out every post from GarGuy and Jooger you can. Those guys know east Tx deer better than most.

It's a different breed of hunting, but well worth it when you kill an East Texas giant. I've hunted both East and South Texas all my life and would rather kill a 150" East Texas buck over a 180" South Texas buck.
