    planting honeysuckle ?

i was tossing the idea around to plant honeysuckle as an attractant. who all has tried it, and how did you plant it if you have hogs around? for those that have, how well did it work out for you? i was planning on doing about a 1 acre food plot, and have a feeder as well as the honeysuckle on the side of the plot.

I've tried and it's difficult but can be done, you can buy the bush and plant it and there is a protection pen you can purchase...If you sprig the end of a growing vine it's difficult because you have to leave that portion in water and sunlight till it sprouts roots and then transplant it to soil....would take a good while for a full acre

I planted it on a youpon fence row along my food plot. You really need to lay hog wire up against the brush to keep it from being grazed down. I have it going great and it gets nutrients from my food plots. Deer LOVE it.

Needs lots of water to grow. I planted several areas on my ranch in west Texas and the only one that survived was near my windmill(from overflow). Once it's root system is established it will grow great. As GG said, you must put a cage around it or it will not last.

I'm not trying to start an arguement, but stating what I saw back in the 80's when I moved to Texas.

Growing up in Arkansas, it was a never ending battle fighting the honeysuckle. Move here and they were selling it at the stores.

Like hogs, there are those that have them and want to git rid of them, those that don't and want them, and those that wanted them- and now want to git rid of them.

Didn't mean to hijack- my Arkansas days were deer poor, food plots were non-existant.

Love the smell of honeysuckle, got a huge one growing around a tallow tree in my front yard. It surrounds the tree and is about 8-9 feet tall. Very popular spot in the summer time.

              Good info.

I'm planting some in two weeks. It's going to be in cages inside my feed pen. I'm going to water it from the 275 plastic totes that the deer rarely drink from.

Using a small bilge pump and an old water hose tee'd off to a 1/4" ID hose. I'll operate it with a 12vdc feeder timer battery and solar panel. One minute of run time will water 1 gallon per plant from this set up.

X2 on what razorback01 said. Exotic invasive plants are typically a bad idea.

Perfect plan. Deer will not let it be too invasive. Jealous here. I have thought of it and tried it once but unsuccessful. Would try lablab also with proper cages.

Great plant for late season stands and it is really easy to transplant. There is honeysuckle everywhere around here, the key to making it an attractant is fertilizing it. Fertilize it with 13-13-13 in the spring and fall and deer will seek it out. Protein levels also jump from around 11% to 17% when fertilized at the rate of 50 lbs per acre.

I'm with Razorback on this. It's a never ending battle trying to kill the honeysuckle that is always trying to take over the fence.....

For years I had a big honeysuckle bush around my propane tank, loved the smell. One Spring the grasshoppers mowed through it in two days, never bloomed again.
