    Electrical problem in attic?

So at bed time last night I went to check the A/c and found the controller had no power (display was off)....so I went and checked the breaker and it was good.....on the way out I checked the other thermostat and it was off also?

Also not working was my vent ahood light which is my "night light" in the kitchen.....I checked the breakers outside on the two ac units and they were good......

So I go up in the attic and find the lights aren't working up there at all....

The ventahood is wired direct to a plug in the attic, the attic lights aren't working and the ac units (obviously in the attic)aren't working.....but I can't find a bad breaker and nothing else in the house isn't working....

Has to be something simple I'm not checking? Help a Brother out!

    What am I missing?

    Thanks GS

I would look into just changing out the breaker and see what happens. Its only a couple bucks to rule it out.

Roger that....its two separate breakers for two separate units and I have no idea what breaker controls the other items......I will give that a try just weird that everything in the attic isn't working!

They will probably be the same size breaker, so you only need 1 to rule out. If the house is newer (90s? or newer) there is also a fuse/breaker out by the a/c unit. I believe its called a nonfusible link or something like that.

        Looks like this:

The breakers at the A/C units outside are typically non trip breakers. Occasionally it may be a fused disconnect instead so double check that. Need to check all breakers at breaker box. Check each individual breaker with your finger. Sometime the breaker is tripped but doesn't look like it. May need to pull panel cover off at breaker box and use a tester and check each breaker and see if there is voltage on each breaker. Occasionally a breaker may look fine (not tripped position)but no power coming out. Then trace wire back from closet known outlet or switch and check power at each spot. Could be loose connection in junction box or on outlet/switch.

Have you checked the voltage at the panel?

Ok I've been doing electrical work for 15yrs. First off....the fact that your vent hood is plugged in the attic (weird as hell) , the attic lights don't work, and the mother board on the furnace is out tells me that there is an issue with the circuit that feeds that area. How long have you been in the house? Are the furnaces gas? Leave your attic door open and the attic light switch on and walk around and turn all the lights on near the area. There could be a loose connection in a neutral junction in a near by box. Keep checking to see if the attic lights kick on. Could be a bad plug near by. Take a lamp or blow dryer and walk around checking plugs near the attic opening. Once you plug it in wiggle it around to see if it's a loose connection in a plug. People get robbed all the time because of connections that have failed over time.

If I am understanding correctly, you are dealing with several different circuits. Check your main breaker and power coming into your panel.

Looks like I may have a "bad leg" from the transformer......entergy is en route. If that isn't it will run these down.....house is 12 years old

The leg coming off the transformer to my house looks like it came undone some.....the one going to the neighbor looks fine

This is very possible. Or bad leg in your underground or overhead drops. If that's the case you will have other things not working in the house you probably haven't noticed. Good luck.

Look at any devices that are 240V. Almost sounds like you lost a leg of power to the house. Not a certainty, but a possibility. When it happens you will have strange occurrences like lights that work one time and not another. Due to feedbacks. Good luck, and be careful.

I was gonna say it looks like you lost a phase. Happens often and drives folks crazy when half of their stuff don't work.
