Question for those that rabbit hunt with beagles

I'm wanting to get one or two beagles for rabbit hunting. I've trained squirrel dogs before but never rabbit dogs. Nor do I know anybody with rabbit dogs, so I have a few questions if y'all could help me out. Can you hunt with just one or two dogs? Most of the videos seem to have 5 or more dogs but all but one usually seem to be "me too" dogs. Just following the leader. So besides for getting to hear them, is it really needed? Can you train a beagle to track blood and rabbits without compromising your rabbit hunting? How much will a puppy from a good hunting line usually cost?
I know froggy and swamp hunterfw have dogs so hopefully they can give some advise or anybody else that may know.
Also does anybody know where I could get a couple of puppies that are AKC registered and from a good hunting line that will be ready in time for next hunting season?
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Froggy can answer a lot of those questions but that old man is probably in bed all ready. I run a beagle for tracking. As far as gettting ready for next season, My dog was born in early March and ran her first successful track in early Oct. that year. Real track not practice. In late Dec. that year, we ran a hard 9/10 mile track. That of course will vary per dog but they are quite capable.

As far a cross training I do not know. If my dog get loose in the country she will run rabbits. That is what they were bred for. As far a hunting rabbits that is more a Question for Froggy.

I hope to breed mine to Froggy's dog this spring and have pups this summer. I know Froggy is planning to breed also. Froggy has contacts in the rabbit hunting crowd and might can hook you up with other dogs.

If you enjoy your beagles as much as I do mine, you are in for a ride.

Years ago I hunted a couple of times with a group that ran deer with a pack of small beagles. They really did a good job of staying on and annoying the deer but did not run them out of the County.

There is something really special about a frosty morning, rabbits and a pack of beagles.

I'm a late nighter and rarely go to bed before midnight.

I do have one of my hounds cross trained to blood track and rabbit hunt. He won't run a deer but will follow blood. It took some work but he understands when I put a lead on him he has a didifferent job than chasing rabbits.

Two good hounds can definitely push a rabbit to the gun. One outstanding hound can get the job done.

I can probably find you a well bred pup from hunting bloodlines. I have a couple of 9 month old AKC pups that are just started on rabbits that I'm considering selling. I hate to but I need to cut back from 8 to about 5 hounds.

        PM me for details.

Yes you can hunt with one but I my self like to have at least 3 that way they compete against each other. A good beagle ranges from $300 to $400. Beagles start at a very young age. I had a pack of 4 and mom dog running at 4 months old.

I'm located in northeast Texas so Mississippi might be a little far.
Froggy I'll send you a PM when I get enough posts.
Thanks for the replies so far.

Is it a general rule that a flushed cotton tail will run in more or less of a circle?

Everything I've read and seen says they will typically circle back to where they were jumped trying to stay in their territory.

Same here. You don't have to teach a good Beagle to run rabbits. It's in their DNA. Running blood takes a little work.

Froggy is your best bet if you don't want to travel outside Texas. Great guy to talk with. I have 529 I myself and wouldn't like it as much if any with just one. Plan to add one more this year and another next year. Good luck
