    Let's Talk Scrapes.....

I set up a blind this weekend on a good trail where I'v seen many a buck travel during the rut. I'll hand corn the spot every chance I get, but I'd like another way to attract deer to that particular trail (I'm not used to being thsi far from a feeder). As well as giving them something to pay attention to rather than the new big green orb hovering in the tree 20 yards over there with the redneck inside it.

So tell me how you make your scrapes, what's worked, and what hasn't!

    So far I've got this.

    1. Find a likely looking overhanging limb.
    2. Beat up ground under neath, raking away grass/debris.
    3. Pour a little dominant buck pee in it, and maybe a little Dale pee. (**** is ****, right Billy?)
    4. Put a camera on the tree?
    5. Maybe some doe in heat pee on one of those things you tie to your foot and drag with you to hang on the tree?
    6. What if anything do you do to the overhanging limb to mimick the deer rubbing their eyes on it, and chewing on it? Should I chew on it?

    Enlighten me, oh great bowhunters!

Corn and Raisins work good enough for me, I never use lures. Sorry!

Start a mineral lick in a couple of spots along the trail. I buy what the local feedstore carries and the deer love the licks.......

just pick a small branch hanging over the edge of a clearing...down to the three to four foot level...it doesn't have to be a big one...break the end of the last twig about 3" from the end, but leave the broken piece attached. Kick the ground up under it, pee in it and leave...more than likely the bucks in the area will start using it...

You pee in it? Is that a joke or are you serious?

I've been eyeballing one of those new dispensers that run on batteries. You can program them to spray a mist or stream.

Dale, I saw this deodorant looking thing on the Drury brothers show that was deer scent. They said it smelled like deer who are grouped together, I guess they give off some smell or pheromone. Always wanted to try it but never have.

Anyone know the name of it?

dead serious. It doesn't matter...pee is pee. I had a tripod a half mile back in the brush once that had a scrape line on the trail I used to go in...it was predominantly used by a buck that I wasn't interested in...I would pee on his scrapes walking in and have some entertainment later in the afternoon watching him "clean them up" and pee on them to cover up mine LOL

I have a male dog that is just like that. Everywhere I pee outside it follows behind me and does the same thing, when the other dogs pee in there spots, he goes behind them and pees on that spot... Funny to watch.

So I guess if your in the blind and have to pee you might as well get out do your business and break a twig. I learn something new everyday.

First I would not corn the area directly around the scrape. Place a feeder in an opening or near their feeding area within a few hundred yards of the scrapeline. Hang your stand on a travel route to the scrapeline between it and the corn. Also hang a stand on the corn. This way does will frequent the area (because of corn) and the buck will continue the scrape because 1 nothing around it has changed and 2 does are in the area, he just has to wait for them to get ready.

I pee in every scrape I see. I read a study one time when they put real deer pee, fake deer pee, and human pee in scrapes and the one visited the most was the human pee.

The problem in that scenario is not the peeing, but the getting in and out of the blind. Better to use a gatorade bottle in the stand and just dump it out when the hunts over.

I wouldn't pour doe attractant in a scrape, did that one year and had on camera ONLY a dominant doe peeing in it for 3 nights running. nothing after.
