    My best buck

So I would like to start this off by saying thank you to the GS in general. This website is full of a bunch of good people that have helped me with a lot of my questions and kept me very entertained while I am supposed to be working.

Now for the story of the deer.

I was able to get onto a lease in Cass County this year half way through bow season thanks to a long time friend of mine that need help. The other member( total of 4) refused to help him and his father out at all with maintaining feeders, checking cameras, planting food plots, and general labor. This worked out well for me so I'm not to mad at the other members. Anyway I took my bow and got into the woods as soon as saw that my check had cleared and was hoping to take a doe or two before the end of archery season so I could use the rest of the season to focus on a buck. Well I saw a total 0 deer the three weekends I hunted but wasn't to bummed I knew it was just a matter of time. The day before opening day of rifle season we decided to fix up an old box blind and stick it on a food plot that we had planted a month earlier. After we got done with the blind we thought it would be a good idea to go check cameras and to see what was going on at the other feeders. That is when we saw that a big 8 was hanging around the north side of the property and me and the buddy were pumped. We decided who would get to sit the stand and I got the short straw. I didn't mind due to the fact that I had only been on the lease a short time and I wouldn't be mad if my buddy shot the buck since I though that he deserved it more than me. So even though I was a little bummed I decided to sit the new stand and try to shot a pig. We wake up and the weather looks like its going to rain most of the morning and I was sooooo close to sleeping in(due to copious amounts of whiskey). After I dragged my but out of bed I decided I might as well head out and sit in the blind. Once I got there I quickly realized I missed my bed, forgot my coffee and felt like hammered dog ****. So 30 minutes after the sun comes up all I hear is the soft pitter patter of rain falling against the roof of the blind and to this day the fact that I stayed awake still amazes me. Another ten minutes goes by and I look up and all of sudden a doe walks out 30 yards from the blind staring hard and I think to my self this is my best bet so I slowly work my rifle up and as I'm about to shoot two yearlings come out and bust me and all three deer run into the woods on the other side of the clearing. So here I am thinking I ruined my chance on a deer this morning hung over and generally not happy. So I get the great idea that I would start working on the latching mechanism on the door so I could cut back on the door moving in the wind and soon as I am half way out the door I look up and see horns!!!! The big 8 came out following the same path of the doe and now I'm full on buck fevered out! So admittedly I panicked and got back into the blind and to the window as quick as I could, the deer should have heard me or seen me but I guess luck was on my side. The deer was head down and only concerned with the sent of the doe and was about ten step away from into the woods after the doe. I was worried he would be gone if couldn't stop him so I tried to grunt. Didn't phase him. Tried to wheeze. Once again he did't care. Now he is about 5 steps away from me having no shot on him so I decide I need to take a shot since he is walking slow. In my haste( and buck fever) I hit the barrel of my rifle on the metal frame of the blind window and the loudest ringing sound I have ever heard go off. I'm terrified he is going to bolt but to my surprise he stops turns his head toward the blind and gives me the perfect broadside shot at 32 yards. I get on him and pull the trigger in a flash. I see the ripple of the impact and he limps behind the tree and I lose track of him. I should have been listening for him to fall but I was to busy acting like a four year old at Christmas to think that far ahead. I decide to give him an hour to die just because after the adrenaline was gone I wasn't to sure of my shot any more. Once I get down I walk over to the tree where he walked in and notice this stuff he got into was thick and I couldn't find any blood. Now I am concerned with finding him. I pick a path that looked a little more used and decided to go down that one. With every step I take I am more and more concerned about finding this deer, then all of a sudden I look down and I notice I'm standing in a 20" diameter puddle of blood. I have no idea how i didn't see it before, but I don't care I'm just pumped to be on the right path. Two more step and I see a blood spray all over a deer sized bush. Then I come around a bend in the path and I see him!!! I can't believe it. This is my first buck worth talking about let alone one that I never should of had a chance shooting with all of my antics in the blind. He ended up scoring 134"( not that I care at all). I'm incredibly proud of him and the memories that I got hunting that day, to me this is what hunting is all about.

Sorry for the long read this is my first thread and I thought some of y'all would enjoy hearing about this hunt just for a few laughs.

Once again thanks to the GS this really is a great community, and next year I hope to take one with the old stick and string.
