    Food Plot Advice

A buddy of mine and I are thinking about trying out a food plot for the upcoming season. We have never done this before so I wanted to try to tap into the knowledge of someone who has. We are hunting in the Schulenburg/Hallettsville are. Our main question is what kind of seed to plant and how big of a plot we should consider.

What kind of equipment you have will pretty much dictate what size plot you can do. I'm sure UncleFish will chime in and give you all the pointers you need. If you are doing it with an ATV, then I would say 1/2 acre to maybe 2 acres would be prime for this. If you have a tractor, then you can go as big as you want considering you have all the right implements for it.

        Thanks!,

We have an ATV and a small tractor with a tiller attachment. Might be able to pull some strings for a larger tractor with a disc.

Check your soil first. You may need some lime in that area, pull several soil samples and send them off to Biologic they will tell you what is lacking, make sure you get all the natural grasses and weeds killed first this may take round up or extra plowing, then you fertilize allow rain to get fertilizer into soil before seeding, call your local county agent and he will tell you the best seed to plant, you need to decide if your going for growth or attractant, and like the other guy said pull your strings to get a bigger tractor to break it all up. You can maintain with your four wheeler and small tractor, good luck it is hard work but it is very rewarding when you get those baby sprouts coming up,

I've been wanting to try food plots also but I'm worried hogs will tear it up. Have y'all ever had any hog problems in the food plots?
