    Any tech gurus (laptop)?

Looking at purchasing a new laptop, I want something light, relatively small (13"), with a backlit keyboard. I think I've narrowed it down but if there are any other recommendations, please shoot!

The 2 I am looking at are the dell XPS 13 and the Samsung ATI book 9 Spin. Both have solid state drives, my question is will 4 gb of RAM and 128 gb SSD be sufficient, or will I want 8 gb RAM and 256 gb SSD? The laptop will be used for mostly work related tasks, Excel, Outlook and so forth, as well as Web browsing. The occasional movie may be played as well. It may be beneficial to add that there is a possibility GIS might be installed on it in the future.

My last note is that if the only memory related issue hindering me is the SSD would it be better to get the 4 gb RAM option and just get an external hard drive, or upgrade the SSD?

    Thanks,

    James

If you don't have budget issues, just get the 8 gb RAM and 256 gb SSD

Get the most you can afford, If you can go a bit larger it will really help. Those minis are ok if you never need a disk drive (I rarely use mine). I tried the 4 gig for the wifey and the next day it went back. She was used to using mine (16 gig ram) and I even think Id like more. I went with AMD VS intel simply because of my budget. 4gig would be a sloth with anything other than web browsing.

I know you didnt mention but ASUS makes really good products. I bought my 2015 A10-7400p/ Radeon 6 for like $399. Came with 8ram and 1TB HDD but i maxex it at 16ram.

128 GB of SSD will be smokin fast for the general use applications you mentioned. That said, I'd still go for more if it's in the budget. I work my system like a mule with 10-12 apps open at any given time.

It's going to be about 150 bucks between the 2, but it's just one of those things if I don't need to spend the extra dough I don't see any use in it. Especially if the same results could be achieved by purchasing an external hard drive that would be more versatile.

Go with more ram and larger drive. While externals are great for things you don't need all the time, you don't wanna have to hook it up constantly. More ram will be faster and is always better

I have the XPS 13 with 8gb ram and 256gb SSD, and run excel and outlook and a few other programs on it. It has an excellent battery life. I am very satisfied with it overall!

SSD all the way. Then as much RAM as budget allows. Asus is good. Dell is good.
