Here's the deal I have 2 labs both AKC registered. The older lab is finishing up her AKC JR hunt title. The younger, which is an offspring of the older, will be starting their hunt testing this spring. I have been looking at UKC and HR hunt testing. I am considering switching my dogs to the started to finished levels of HR testing because I feel they mimic true hunting situations better than AKC Hunt Tests. Are there any pros or cons for having the UKC title on the dog vs the AKC?

This would open a can of worms on a retriever forum, lol
I used to run UKC HRC, I cannot speak to the exact difference between that and AKC, but HRC uses real birds, guns, and does a very good job simulating actual hunting scenarios. While there is a little lineancy at the started level, HR and HRCH titles are quite an accomplishment. You could always go onto the grand should you chose that route! Hope this helps....

The pros are that it is a more realistic hunting setting, and the UKC tests I have ran seem easier vs the comparable AKC level. You will notice a lot of dogs that have HRCH titles with UKC but only have SH titles on the AKC side. The only con is that in my opinion the AKC titles hold more weight if you plan on breeding later on. I get nervous at tests and I prefer the UKC events because the ones I have been to seem way more laid back than AKC. I haven't been to a test in a few years and just thinking about it makes me want to go out and work with my dogs. Good luck and hope you bring home lots of ribbons!

I ran my dog in both . . . . . in fact most high end trained and performing dogs will have both.
My boy was HRCH, MH and not a day goes by where i don't miss that spitfire. Agree that the UKC is easier, marks/blinds are shorter and allow more deviation during blinds.
Saying that a dog that is hrch is going to be SH is not correct. I've see HRCH dogs that are Field Trial as well or Master National contenders.
Honestly most folks I've ever known run em both.

I like akc. I felt ukc was almost to "easy". They seem to be more of a "pass the standard" vs. top dog wins
Both are great programs and will build a bond with dog. I just prefer my dog selection to come from "top dog " and not "he passed the test" ... Cause I've seen some "pass the test" I wouldn't have if given to me.
Just my oppinion

From what I've read and seen I believe this as well regarding UKC. I like the point system that UKC implements. I am planning on checking out a couple HRC tests this spring. I will get the UKC registration paperwork sent out this week.
