    Neutering a bird dog

Do you do it at all? Wait for 24 months?

I've read a lot of anti-neuter articles and a lot of pro-neuter articles.

It's worse than republicans and democrats arguing.

What have you done real world experience?

My Boykin is 18 months old and I feel like he would benefit from it but don't want to do it too early.

Unless you plan on breeding it will not matter. Been my experience and I've owned/hunted shorthairs for 25 years.

When you neuter a dog, he will lose a little bit of his drive. He will also lose a little of his dominance/aggression. Which is more important to you?

He's a family dog 3/4 of the time, is how I'm looking at it.

I have no issues with neutering a dog. In fact, I don't think enough people do it. Too many people think "my dog is great/the best ever"... We all love our dogs, but most feel that way because they love their dog, not because its actually true. I do think it's good to wait until they're 24 or 30 months as some say that the hormones released during puberty help fight cancers later in life.

I've been around plenty of dogs that have been fixed and it has not effected their drive or their aggression. Nor has it "settled" them down as some say. It simply makes them not viable to breed.

I have run hunting dogs all my life neutering will not affect their drive negatively if anything it helps them focus more on the task at hand, that being said if you have no plans breeding cutting him is the only way to go.

Yeah I'm not too worried about his drive. I've really curious to when you guys do it. Should I wait til 24 months or am I good at 18.

The sooner the better. I cut all my males around 6-8 months old. I believe the reason some wait so long is to see if said dog turns out to be stud worthy.

I cut my Boykin @ about 24 months. he had been in training the previous 9 months.
My trainer had no opinion on cutting the dog, he just wanted to know if I saw a difference before and after.

I dont buy dogs to breed, regardless of their abilities/bloodlines.

Did you see a difference? I'm more concerned with long bone growth.
