    Feeder questions. Share your knowledge

Well this year I will be on a lease, my first. I have a 200lbs feeder. Can get out to lease once a month or so.

I would like to feed in the off season, hope to hog hunt.

    School me.

How should I set up the spinner? Can set up 6 different spin times. How Long of a spin?

Does feeding all year have benefits for deer?

Anything you know and what to share about how to set up a feeder is welcomed. I hope this gets to be a good thread with a lot of info for all newbies like me.

It's hard to tell you how long to feed because it varies depending on distance between your spinner plate and funnel. If you use an eliminator spinner plate then a few seconds at daylight and dusk would be ok. 200 lbs will most likely last a month that way. As far as feeding year round, do it if you can afford it. It will offer you opportunities at hogs whenever you want to hunt them and will also help the deer stay central to your hunting area year round. Certainly doesn't hurt. Good luck!

It depends upon what kind of spinner plate, the distance between the plate and the funnel ( if you have one ) and how long the timer runs. Stick a bucket under it, let it spin for a time, and weigh the amount it throws. Make your estimate based on this and adjust accordingly. Best I can do.

Like others said if you want to get very accurate hold a bucket around the plate to catch all the corn then weigh the corn and adjust your time accordingly based on how often you want to come refill. Personally I feed about 2.5 lb in the morning and 2.5lb in the evening during the off season. And yes I believe it benefits the deer. I usually just feed corn which does not have a lot of nutrition but sometimes mix in peas that does. But I definitely believe it keeps the deer accustom to coming to the feeders and hopefully they don't roam as far.

Both. I think I have a good tree to hunt out of and the blind will be around 100 yards.

              This is the feeder

Thanks on the info regarding the bucket test.

                If you have cows.
#1- driver 3 T post into ground 1 for each feeder leg and tie them off with wire. Or make a pin around the feeder. This will keep the feeder from being knocked over.
#2- See if an Eliminator spinner plate will fit on your motor. It fits up tight really close to the funnel and doesn't allow for the wind to blow corn off the plate and it is coon proof.
I'd set it for 3 seconds at daylight and 3 seconds just before sunset. This for the off season. Then during the season I always set it to throw 2 times in the morning and evening. Your out there more to keep it filled up.
                Best of luck!

Ya there were cows at this place last year, but they just sold the herd.

All season 350 with the eliminator plate adjusted to max flow. Feeding twice a day at 10 seconds each feeding will last a month maybe 5 or 6 days past that if you push it. Need to check the eliminator plates they are not bullet proof. Kernels get stuck in the links drain fast

So why do a lot of feeders have 6 programmable times? When would you use this?

Anybody mix some other type of feed with the corn, other then pea gravel. Lol.

First off you need to make the feeder coon, bird and squirrel proof or it will get emptied in a hurry and the way that feeder is now they all will have a field day with it. The eliminator spinner plate will not always keep coons out as I have more then 10 feeders with them and at some of them the coons have figured them out and get to the corn by pulling down on each side of the plate at the same time as I've watched them do it when hog hunting at night. I've had coons empty a 1000# feeder in a month that had the eliminator spinner on it. Since you will only be able to go about once a month, I would get a much bigger feeder because that little feeder is pushing it and what happens when you can't make it every single month. For hog hunting I like to throw a lot of corn because it makes the pigs want to be at your feeder first because they know they get a decent amount. I run my feeders 4 times a day in the off season to hunt the hogs at night. My feeders are set for 3-5 seconds at daylight, 3-5 seconds two hours before dark and then 10-12 seconds at dark and 10-12 seconds a hour after dark. The two daytime feedings are for the deer and the night time feedings for the hogs. I also have a few feeders that go off for 5 seconds at noon for the turkeys. I have 1000# feeders and I have to fill them about every 2.5-3 months.
