    Seems a bit early . . .

Found this fella in my garage this morning. Probably almost 70 degrees outside.
He barely had enough energy to try and rattle that tail.Click image for larger version

Needs at least 4 more years and lots of mice. No where big enough to BBQ just yet.

I saw one of those blind snakes yesterday sunning outside of my gate yesterday on the driveway. I did not feel like walking back to the house to get something to crush it with.

That appears to be a very small snake, (baby) there are probably more around. Watch your step.

Not really early, depending where you are. I got one about that size on the road last night in south Texas, about 65F.

I killed a rattler first or second week of December last year. I watched my steps quail hunting this weekend with how warm it was.

82* Here in Abilene yesterday, not surprised at all. Every wasp in the county came out too.

It's not about time of season but temperature. February is when I started working the dens for the roundup.

Exactly. Lots of factors can go into it, including moisture and barometric pressure.

Day after Christmas a buddy and I found 63 snakes of various species out on the road in Hidalgo, Willacy, and Jim Hogg counties preceding the cold front. Low barometric pressure, moderate (85) day temps and mild (upper 60's/low 70's) night temps led to a lot of activity. It can happen any time of year, but gets less likely with higher latitudes.

Folks I know in the northeast part of the country were finding timber rattlesnakes at mountain dens on Christmas eve.

Don't think I'd drink in that camp. Gotta be on your toes!

Biggest rattler I've killed was in LaSalle County in January--about the 2nd week. All depends on temperatures more than a calendar.

If the snake catcher isnt comfortable that he has gotten most of them we wont be there ourselves! Not worth it with two young kiddos running around out there
