This is my first year duck hunting, we built a blind around a friends 8 acre tank and have probably hunted 5 or 6 mornings, and jumped them two or three times. I've really enjoyed duck hunting, it's like dove hunting with the fast paced shooting and joking around with friends. Kinda like turkey hunting with the calling as well, it's very neat to see a group of birds react to the call and decide to make a 180 and cup up to land right in front of you. Never realized how loud ducks were, you can hear them quak from a few hundred yards away and when they fly over it sounds like a jet. Everybody is saying its a bad year (I have nothing to compare it to) but we have shot around 100 ducks in a handful of hunts all from one blind just on a tank. Nice change up from deer hunting since several of us shot bucks early on in the season

Early morning sunrises, birds whistling by you before you can see well, watching the birds work and come into your decoys, being with friends and being able to have fun. BUT I may be the only one, duck hunting will never hold a candle to bow hunting. I would rather even shoot a hog with my bow over a limit of ducks.

years and years of experience knowing the speed at which they fly, the way a group moves, size of the bird, the silhouette, and if they make any sound, also helps if you have hunted the same area for a while you will know what type of birds frequent your area
I love it because of all the reasons listed above, and it to me is a challenge and a skill that I like trying to perfect. I also like that you have trophy ducks and the chance of once in a blue moon time you shoot a banded duck (been duck hunting 18 years never got a band)

Theres nothing like a duck buzzing you before sun up all you hear is the whistling wings and then the splash of the water. That will get you jacked up. After daybreak, its something to behold watching a couple birds work your spread while you 'talk' to them. Now a days I love seeing how pumped up my lab gets. I think she gets more excited than I do! You get to enjoy all this with friends and/or spouse on top of it all. If you ever get to experience all that you will understand. Its something to behold.

Ducks and geese.... They eat well. Especially in gumbo or the perineal favorite, stuffed with cream cheese and a slice of jalapeƱo and the wrapped in bacon.
I got into waterfowling when I was 6-7 years old because down here, it's what we do. Kinda like the folks that grew up in the hill country are introduced into deer hunting because that is what is there and readily available, so it was with me growing up on my grandparents 800 acre rice farm ...... It's what we did
As far as what "it is" about is not something that I feel can really be explained. I mean I can tell you how cool it is or how awesome it is to be working a flight of sprigs with the ole pintail whistle and then they flop over and plunge down out of the ozone right on top of you. Or I can describe what it's like to be caught up inside a sky carp tornado, watching them swirl closer and closer, then seeing a couple of them do a whiffle right in front of you....
I/we could try to explain all that but it wouldn't do any good. It has to be witnessed and experienced. Once that happens you'll be hooked and then you'll look back at this post and say
" wow!!! Now I get it, I wish I would have done this years ago

It's just hard to beat a good morning in the duck woods! Fun with friends and i love to eat them. It's also nice to be able to hit the woods before work and make it back to the office by 9.
It's been a pretty poor season up here overall this year. There's been a few good weeks, but just not near the ducks we're used to.
