    Feeder Question

So I went hunting last night and about 7:10 a hog comes in and there is still light and I can still my pins, so im pumped. He is starting to put his nose down into some corn and I have my release attached to my string loop just waiting for him to start eating and relax. Well my feeder is new (new to me) and it has that eye that goes off 30 min. after sun up and 30 before sunset (Supposedly). Well it didn't do that, it went off about 7:15PM (seem late to me).

Well when it went off that pig acted like he had never heard a feeder before an he bolted...I mean he Usain Bolt-ed. He became a track star and sprinted so fast I could hear him for 100 yards sprinting, serious sprinting, and oinking all the way. It was funny but I was bummed that the feeder went off so late that cost me an opportunity.

My question is does anybody know how to make the feeder go off earlier. I can't find a "timer" in the box, just that eye that detects sunlight/sunset. If anybody's familiar about how to fix this give me a holler.

    Thanks

You need a timed feeder. Otherwise you are stuck with the pain of relying on the sun.

They are cheaper than you'd know and you can make them work with your current setup I'm sure.

And they may have improved photo eye feeders within the last 5 years, but if not good luck with a thunder storm as the lighting will cause your feeder to go off a bunch running your battery down and losing corn.

You could "shade" the photocell w/ something to allow it to get darker somewhat sooner than the surrounding area. Maybe turning the photocell to the east would help.

All right that's what I was afraid of. I had to do a late feeder replacement because of a feeder failure so I had the one mentioned available. I'll just replace the motor with one that has a timer. Thanks for the heads up.

I was hoping maybe if I cleaned the eye or something it might make it work better. If it would go off just a little earlier that would be great.

            Thanks for the info.

I've heard that you want to face the "eye" to the south.

I never could get those type of feeders to go off early enough in the evening or in the morning. Timed is the only way to go.

Liberty --- shading the photocell will make it go off earlier in the evening & later in the morning --- turning the photocell toward the east will make it go off earlier in the morning and earlier in the evening

If my memory serves me right my dad used clear silicone over the eye. I would try some layered clear scotch tape until the right amount of layers make it go off earlier in the evening.

The problem is it will go off later in the morning.

It is so easy to convert to a timer. About $30 and 10 minutes. Snip a couple wires, couple clips, done.

You can take a piece of tape and shade the eye....don't cover the eye just use it above the eye to make things darker.....but 7:15 is not that bad.....much earlier and you can have them eating before you can get a shot...

If you shade the eye it may go off later than you want in the am....

You don't know my lack of electrician skills . I was an electricians helper doing rough outs on residential homes when I was in HS. That job single handedly kept me in school.

It goes off about 8:00 in the AM so earlier wouldn't bother me. I always bring some corn with me to put on the ground anyways.
