I had a father/son team hunting at the ranch this weekend. It started out great with the son taking a 160 class eleven pointer the first evening.

Saturday morning started out good as well. Standing in the middle of the road when we turned a corner was a double drop tine! This deer had disappeared for over a month. I had seen him last weekend so knew he had returned to his old stomping grounds. The distance was a little far and the dad wasn't comfortable with the shot. We eased forward but the buck hightailed it. We played cat and mouse with the buck two other times but he always gave us the slip.
Saturday evening was uneventful. We saw a lot of good deer but not the double drop. The wind was howling and everything was spooky.
Sunday morning dawned crisp and cold. We headed out for one last try. They had to leave by 9:00 so it was going to be a short hunt. When we rounded a turn there were three bucks walking on a road up a hill. I looked through the spotting scope and saw drops on one of them. We drove forward until almost being in range. They all moved off into the brush. I drove forward another 50 yards and killed the engine.
A few minutes later a buck started coming out. Another one was behind him. It was the double drop. They stood near the edge for a while until the one behind finally moved. I gave my hunter the green light. One shot to the neck and it was all over.
