My wife's cousin bought a set up from Harbor Freight of all places that actually works pretty good. It sends everything to his phone. He can be a thousand miles away and if there is activity it sends it to his phone and he can go on the app and see what it was and its pretty clear. I think he said it came with two or three IR cameras. I don't know what model he bought but I was thinking about putting one up at my house.

HF sells the Bunker Hill brand as referenced above. I know some folks in the neighborhood bought them back when the wheel thefts got bad around here. Have not heard any complaints.

Is there some legal standard of resolution for a security video to be used as evidence?

Dropcam by the Nest Company. Ease of use and setup is great. 2 way voice is handy. www.nest.com

Appreciate the feedback. We'll be checking out the recommended systems. I'm curious about some feedback on wireless systems as well.

My systems are wireless entry detection, but cameras are wired to a common DVR. If you want to monitor and not worry about saving the video, wireless is OK.

Listen to this guy! He got me in contact with some great guys to work with. Better quality for less than any other quotes I got, and fast.

Video is good but you need a license plate or something. You can have a face as clear as day but the police can't get a warrant without a name. Video evidence really helps and is good but it's not guaranteed success. Even then your stuff is long gone so you are just chasing the conviction

I would stay away from the "box kits" you can buy off the shelf. The life expectancy isn't great and the video quality usually isn't that great. If you would like to discuss further and get more info, you can pm me. This is what I do for a living.
