    Protein feed for mule deer?

So we are trying to get the mule deer on protein in Briscoe county but we are not having much luck at all. They really will not come to feeders either but we were hoping to get them to take to the protein both for antler growth and attractant but they do not seem interested. The pens we built are 60'+ in diameter and we cut down several low spots to allow access. We are going to install some alfalfa feeders to hopefully help get them on it but I was also looking for other suggestions. Has on anyone fed the soy bean mix with any luck? Any other suggestions.

They hammered alfalfa and red chain protein at our place on Childress. Red chain is peanut based and has a strong smell that the animals really seemed to like. I dont know if there is a red chain dealer out that way, but I would certainly recommend it.

Good to know roasted unroasted or did it matter? I think we fill one with it to see how they take to it and go from there.

I will look in to it. We will be running 6 2000lb feeders so I am trying to keep it close because I want to have it delivered but I will ask the feed store in Quitiquae. Where are you buying the alfalfa in Childress? Have tried the compressed and wrapped stuff?

We would buy the Alfalfa from tractor supply or true value. I think phs supply started carrying red chain in Childress about the time we left the area two years ago.

We feed lyssy and eckels near post and the mule deer love it. They almost never eat corn, but will stay at a protein feeder for an hour. They hate pens, so if you have you protein behind panels that might be part of the problem.

Unfortunately the pigs are out of control at this place and no pen is not a option. We're hoping 60' and low entry points will help.

Ranch we hunt in Mexico feeds L&E. Deer eat it like crazy down there.

Only if we could have the same results! Not that it's anywhere near a close comparison do they have pens at that place?

L&E vote here too. And alfalfa. They'll eat corn too but not as much as good protein.

They do. The pens are huge though.....like several acres. Don't know why they make them that big. They just run 5 strand barbed wire in a giant square/rectangle. Just trying to keep cows out.
