    Atv troubleshooting help

I have a 84 200m that I got when I was a kid. I let it set up for several years and now trying to get it going again. I replaced the original carb with a new one off ebay. It started up and purred like a kitten, so I replaced tires a and new battery and everything worked. We rode it for 2 days with no problems. Then my son was riding it and it lost power and would not climb a hill. It idels fine but when you give it gas it starts to spit and sputter and smoke as if choking. I got it home and cleaned carb 3 times and filters think that was problem. Still doing. Reset valves same thing. Ordered new card thinking first one was bad. Same thing. Put mystery oil in plug and worked in thinking stuck valve. Same thing. I idels find but cuts out and starts smoking at 1/4 thottle. I also checked compression and it was 130 but the gauge was the rubber type not the screw in type so I figured it could be off the 10-20 psi. I have tested everything I know. Could it be electrical? What and how to test? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like its starving for gas or air. Is there a vent on the gas tank? Also does it take a battery and if so is the battery dead? I had a Prairie that I got going. Would idle perfect but would lag on power when I gave it gas. Turns out it was a lack of spark I guess? Older bikes like a Honda 300 fourtrax doesn't really matter. I don't waste the money on a battery. Just kisckstart and take off. Newer and or bigger bikes tho it is important.

Check compression with throttle wide open?

I think the vent is in the cap. There is a lever on top of the cap that says on/off. I thought that might be problem so tried it with cap off and did not change. I also cleaned the fuel filter and fuel flows good to carb.

Did you try any adjustments or idles on the carb? The idle gas air mixture screw shouldn't make a difference when you're throttling but worth a shot. Sometimes the aftermarket carbs are not an exact replacement.

You say it smokes when you give it throttle. What color is the smoke? If it's black it is running too rich - too much fuel not enough air.

Another thing you must consider....when left sitting for extended periods the crank seals do get "dry" and as the engine warms, will begin to suck trans/gear oil into the combustion chamber. This usually results in a white smoke. If this is your case, the only option is replacing those seal/gaskets. I have had this issue on some of my older MX bikes that we have been "reviving".

Yes I did adjust the air and throttle. Didn't help

The smoke is white to blue color

I cut off end of plug wire and replaced end and it didn't helped. Traced down most of wire and it looks good except I can't tell where ground connects. Shouldn't it connect to frame somewhere?

Any knocking? Sounds like you may have washed out some rings.

I had an '84 200s that had the same symptoms after sitting for years. Turned out to be an exhaust problem. The inner wall of the header pipe collapsed and would cause it to bog down with anything other than idle. I'm not saying that's your issue but may be worth a look.
