    Afternoon Duck Hunt??

We are going to try an afternoon/evening duck hunt at our place today. This season has been tough with the weather, rain, bird numbers etc. Trying out some new tactics and hopefully it will pay off. Has anyone had success this year trying afternoon hunts?? We are hunting just inside Oklahoma off the Red River.

If you hunt close to a roost it can be pretty good. I've had some luck, but if you do it to much the birds won't roost there for long.

Haven't done it this year yet but one of our bigger ponds is strictly an afternoon only hunt. Birds roost on it and fly off in the morning start coming back a few hours before dark. Only thing that that is hard about it, more light and harder to hide if you don't have a good blind or cover.

I don't like the evening hunts because you have to stop shooting at sundown. All the birds seem to come in 5 minutes after sundown when I am cleaning up.

Yup! Also I hate shooting the roost. The only time I do afternoon hunts are during teal season and that is all pass shooting.

              Yep. That irks me.

Afternoon hunts are a bit of a taboo for most folks up here because they do move birds out. We don't shoot later than 8:30 at the club and all the public woods are closed to afternoon hunting. That being said, afternoon hunts can be effective if you can get them to work before shooting light!!

We shoot our rest fields the last two afternoons of season and it seems kinda wrong haha. We smash them, but 90% of the ducks still come in after shooting light, it's like they know!

Corn helps them show up earlier
