I would suggest leaving your dirty clothes in the areas when you leave so your scent is always there. If he gets used to your scent you can get the drop on him easier.

I have had a couple of wiley old boars that I have played chess with over the years. Could have killed any of them with a gun at any time but the challenge of killing them with a bow kept me from it.
Last one was killed on the neighboring place, some of the others vanished and I can only assume met a similar fate
