The biggest problem with major airlines is the adversarial relationship between management and labor. Management does not care about the work force and vice versa. All upper management wants is their big multi million dollar bonuses and to get that they have to cut pay and benefits to the work force.
The work force then retaliates by a deliberate slow down as well as bad attitudes that the customer sees and suffers from.
Airlines management works much like the US Congress.

Lord knows I can relate...........the switch from Continental to United has been horrible. I also cant justify the drive to Hobby when I live 15 miles from Intercontinental. Headed to RSA on Saturday and did not even consider United...........really crazy right! After 10+ straight years of road warrior travel I really think the days of REAL service are gone..........unless you are on a international carrier. Southwest, Frontier, Alaskan and Spirit are kicking the big boys guts in!!!

I used to fly a lot and then stopped. So when I started over again I asked my fellow travelers what airline? Southwest was the clear winner. So, I tried to prove them wrong. I tried United. I tried Delta and I kept coming back to southwest. They do not have the "perks" but you pay for the perks with all the fees. The perks once helped over look the pain. Now they do not. Clubs are crowded. Service is down. Unless you are a smoker I do not see any reason to join the clubs. So back to southwest and just pay airport prices for drinks and food. I feel that I have come out ahead. And I love Hobby compared to IAH. So much easier to get in and out. The remodel sold me on it.

Update: I've gone all-in with Southwest. On my last two tickets I have saved ~$500 and $375 versus United and that includes the early bird. I'll be A list by the 2nd half of the year I'm sure. With those types of savings, there won't be any guilt over food and bar expenses.

          rotationally insert United

I'm so glad I'm not flying every week like I used to. The road worriers I work with half use United and half Southwest. Mainly because of where they live compared to the airport (Houston). Back in the day, Continental was great - everything I've heard about United is sub par since the merger.

I used to enjoy flying Continental. When they merged with United, things went down hill. Before it was totally bad, I'd look at the planes and only pick Boeing equipment since United used Airbus and they didn't mess with the flight crews during the early stages. United flight crews were gruff and sometimes even just rude/curt, Continental was as nice as always.

Continental was HQed out of Houston.
United is HQed out of Chicago.

Kinda reminds me of other stuff we got from the fine leadership from Chicago... Pay more, get less.

No matter how crappy United (AA and DL too) is I refuse to start and end each trip with a drive through Houston proper. Add to that the delightful drive through the ghetto that surrounds Hobby.

I'm UA flyer no matter what because my time matters. I just do work in the United Club. If I lived on the south side I would take Southwest 24/7.

My dad travels every week, and he ONLY flies SouthWest, if he can help it. If that helps you out any.
