Need help with windows in house.

Our house was built in the 70's and have single pane windows. My wife wants to know what we can do in order to keep the coolness from coming through the windows in our Baby's room. Any and all info is appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Spencer

I have the same issue.. only two options we have. 1) replace the windows which costs mucho dolla.. 2) use some of the shrink wrap stuff like I did on our big window in the livingroom.

Where exactly is the cold coming thru? If it's coming from the bottom where the window meets the sill then you can apply a weatherstripping that will impede the cold air from coming in.

Thick drapes and curtains will stop a lot of the radiant cold that comes through on windows. We put double layers up in our first house and it helped immensely.

Make sure that the glass is glazed properly. Wood frames use putty, aluminum use plastic strip and possibly a silicone sealant. Caulk the window frame around the outer perimeter. Once all that is done you can fabricate a temporary storm window out of plastic sheeting that will allow for dead air space between the glass and outside air.

I seen the shrink wrap stuff at ace, how does it work? Can you still use your blinds?

This, short of spending the money to upgrade to double pane windows, thick curtains and drapes will block the draft.

Clean surface around window, stick double sided tape all the way around metal on edge of window, stick the clean plastic to it working as many wrinkles as u can out. Then use a hair dryer to get rest of wrinkles out. Yes your blinds can be used afterwards but it will be easier if you remove them during install.

i know Mccoys actually sells the storm window add ons for around $50 depending on the size. All you have to do is caulk them and screw them on. Pretty fast and will make a huge difference especially for the babys room.

Proceed with caution on that stuff.

I had a tenant put that stuff up one time in a rent house I have.

The adhesive stuck to the paint and when removed cost me several hours of clean up and repainting the areas where the adhesive had damaged the paint and paper layer of sheet rock. Not good.

He had no deposit left after doing that to a dozen windows.

I don't know how much he actually saved on his electric and gas bill for the winter but I'm sure it was less that 10 bucks.

Lost all his deposit. Wasn't worth it for him.

If your not concerned about looks and looking out window. What I did in my first house kids room was cut a piece of 1/4" sheetrock to fit in window put some insulation up and another piece of rock. It worked for heat, cold and sound.

American Best choice is about the best deal you will find on replacement windows.

                              Plastic, stapler, old quilt/blanket.
Just put some plastic then an old quilt/blanket over the window in the winter months. My dad did it for years.
