I want to install at home generator.

I'm building a new house and I am wanting to put in a 22 kW generator. I've looked at Generac generators and to have it installed they are estimating around $6000. That isn't too big of a deal since I can always go look on the side of the roads for aluminum cans in my spare time. I've looked at a few websites and seen that the automatic transfer switch can be purchased for around $700. I am having my builder get a price from his electrician for installing the transfer switch during construction versus having the generator company install the switch later.

My power meter is going to be on a different wall from the breaker box due to some height issues that inspections brought up. I assume the generator automatic transfer switch is installed between The power meter and the breaker panel. A question for you electricians out there, is the automatic transfer switch installed between the power meter and the breaker panel? Another question, can the transfer switch the installed in my garage by my breaker panel? If at all possible I would like to keep it off my exterior wall.

Some of the Generic gen systems come with an auto transfer switch, and free delivery....you will need a battery..auto parts store carries them.the system ties in between the meter can and breaker box, but you may look at the systems with ac shedding.
Lots of on line places to buy. I have a 22k, with hole house transfer switch.....

BTW, there is a generator place off 35, on Dixie in Pearland

    check this place: http://www.powerequipmentdirect.com/...enerators.html

It has to be electrically installed between the meter and panel, but it can physically be wherever you want it. As long as the wire is capable of your needed load at that distance.

The transfer switch can be mounted anywhere you want it. But keep in mind the closer everything is the cheaper it will be on both material and labor.

You feed the switch from utility power and generator power. Out of the switch feeds the house / breaker panel. I hope that helps things more understanding to you.

Thanks a lot. I am looking into moving the gas stub out over to the side of the house where the power meter is located so the generator could be located on that side too. That would be more cost-effective. The way it is set up now the electric meter would be on the Eastside and the gas meter would be on the west side of house.

Just found out there's no room on the electric meters of the house to put the gas meter in. I guess that means I'll be spending a little bit more on wire.

                  or go propane,
the gas meter is set by the gas folks....and run the gas line were ever it needs to go, may be cheaper than conduit and wire
