    Feeding Axis deer?

I have a good freind who owns 18 acres on the frio river just north of Leakey. It is covered with whitetail and axis deer sign and I have permission to hunt it all I want to. I live 4 hours from there and don't have the time or money to be travleing back and forth to keep a feeder filled every other week. Anybody got any ideas of what and how I could feed the axis come June or July that would allow me to go down and put feed out and then come back a few weeks later and try to take my first axis buck? I have heard that axis love alfalfa. If I put out square bails of alfalfa, how many would I need to put out in order for it not to run out before I got back down there a month later? Thanks for any advice given

If I leave the wires on the bales will it take them longer to eat it over spreading the hay out on the ground?

You might try something like this.

A 55 gallon drum electric feeder will stay full for at least a month if you set it correctly. Maybe "the money issue" affects you buying one but if you can find a cheap one you don't have to go back every other week to fill. The benefits of a timed feeder far outweigh any alfalfa bale. corn is like crack.

First question: is Alfalfa the best attractant for axis or is there something else that works well also?

Second question: what is wrong with spreading alfalfa on the ground? Don't want to spend all that money on a feeder if I don't have to. Yes I am a tight with the checkbook!

A few deer can eat the alfalfa in one day.....a feeder would a) control the times they eat, b) make them more patterned, c) keep you from having to come back every other week, d) save you gas and time and e) increases your chances 10 fold..

Bottom line is you gotta pay to play......

The only reason I would have to pay to play is because it is so far away!

HHHMMM! were starting to rhyme here

I have hunted my whole life and have never had either a lease or a feeder! God has granted me with great freinds who are willing to share their great hunting grounds. I have always been close enough to run out to the ranch anytime and spread some more corn out. Looks like I might have to bite the bullet and spend a little money on a feeder for once. Which will lead to my next post I guess!

Axis also really like apple flavored deer blocks - if you put them in an area where they are travelling, they will be on it in less than 24hours. They'll usually only last about 3days depending on how many deer are in the herd, but it's what I use for last minute setups.

I promise what you spend on Alfalfa hay, you will be able to buy a good feeder. A have seen deer not eat the alfalfa hay that is still tied with the wire/string, It is to hard to get apart. They will eat the broken blockes good.

Blocks are good. You may also want to try some of that "Buck Grub" from the Wal-mart. I think it cost about $5/bag. Man, they love that stuff. I've put some out before light and there on it that morning. For sure by afternoon. Good Luck!

Better get ready to take a second loan on the house. I just bought Alfalfa this past weekend for $9.85 a bale.
