    Prairie Dogs in Fort Worth

Back in the 1990's while visiting family that lived in east Ft. Worth, I had occasion to exit 820 east onto 287 North near a park at the northwest corner of the 820 E and 287 N interchange. I saw numerous prairie dogs on the sides of the road. I grew up spending summers and holiday breaks in Ft. Worth, and hunted north and west of Ft. worth since age 3, and had never seen a prairie dog in the wild. I looped around that interchange several times to confirm I was actually seeing prairie dogs. Sure enough it looked like they had a full blown town in that area. Made it a point to go by that interchange for several years and always saw them standing up just outside their mounds, or scampering across the ground into a hole. It has been many years since I have been to Ft. Worth, so just curious if the prairie dog town is still there, or if anyone else remembers seeing them.

Any ideas where they came from, or if there are wild prairie dog towns anywhere else in the DFW/North Texas area?

I know exactly where you're talking. I don't have any idea how/why they were there but there was a ton!!! I think they're gone now. Smog killed 'em.

I remember seeing lots of prairie dogs in that area. I think they've been gone for many years now. Don't know where they came from or what happened to them.

I think someone poisoned them with poison peanuts. It's been several years now.

I've never heard of them that far South. That's pretty wild.

I remember seeing them back in the early eighties. I go by there about twice a year and always look for them. Haven't seen them in a long time.
