How many lbs of sand per gallon?

Need to anchor a portable basketball goal that Santa is expected to deliver Christmas Eve (wink wink) How many lbs of sand do I need for a 35 gallon base?

Best I've come up with is 1 gal = 13.35 lbs, which would be 467 lbs total. That seem accurate?

Why not use water? Easier to drain too. I have no idea about the sand though.

We have a goal in the backyard that used to fall over when a butterfly farted on it. Instead of filling it up with sand, I put 3 40lb bags on the back edge of the base and it hasn't fallen over again. I had to drain it once and I swore never again.

Primarily because I live in Lubbock and it's very windy here and it's going to broadside to our predominant West & sw winds. Also everything I've ever anchored with water eventually began to leak or all out cracked due to hard freezing

What are the dimensions of the base?

I've used a gallon of antifreeze and the rest water and haven't had a problem.

I drove some hooked sucker rods into the ground at an angle and then used a ratchet strap to hold it down. The original water had frozen and busted the base.

Put two eye bolts in the ground and strap that baby down

I did the same thing this past weekend. I put 7 40lb bags of crushed granite (best deal I could find, cheaper than the sand I found) and it didn't fill it up. Probably needs 2-3 more bags.

I also don't use water because it cracks and leaks out.

I put one in for a Christmas present in 1993 next to the driveway, put a couple pieces of rebar in the hold before I poured the the concrete and it's still there. I set the bottom post first and then filled it with concrete, then added the 2nd, and 3d and did it again with a ladder to make it more sturdy. I'm letting the next home owner try to take it out!

Somebody told me I'd rust out the steel tube with the concrete inside, but 22 years later it's still there.

Academy has a product that you just add a little water to it and it expands. To make it a liquid again you just add salt. I found this out when I donated a couple of basketball goals to my girls daycare. It comes in a light blue plastic container.
