    Public Land

I have never hunted public land but i hunt 8000 acres that borders the davy crockett national forest. I was wondering what i have to do to hunt it as in tags, permits, etc if needed at all. I have heard nothing but good about it the last three weekend while at the ranch and might have to slip in and give it a try. Any help would be appreciated

$48 Annual Public Hunting (APH) permit. Does are only allowed during archery season unless you draw a doe tag for the general season (the deadline to apply was Oct. 1 - too late for this year). Otherwise, it is buck only.

you dont have to have the permit to hunt the forest just a hunting license...
you have to have a permit to hunt alabama creek wma because it is run by the state... the rest of the forest is federal land..

I was informed recently that Sam Houston has the same draw as well as deadline for does, but my understanding is that if a person were to visit the ranger station on say the opening weekend of rifle season there are generally left over doe tags available.

This information was given to me by a close friend that hunts the SHNF every year with both a bow and a rifle.

thought we were talking 'bout DCNF? Are rules the same for all NF? I'd hate to go somewhere and find out there are local rules that apply to that Unit as well. Just a thought.

No permit required to hunt the National Forest, a doe permit is needed to kill does during rifle season. I have been hunting DCNF for about 15yrs now and know this info is correct.

Certain areas within the NF are leased by the state for wma's. You need the 48 dollar permit to hunt those. Otherwise it is free. The best thing to do is call the ranger station for the area you want to hunt to be sure.

No permit required for does during archery only season

I thought the DCNF was closed along with the SHNF.

There are some Great deer that come out of DCNF every year, the only problem is the number of people, Bow seaon is not that bad though. The key is getting way off the roads because most of the hunters you run into hunt within sight of a road.
