DPMS .223 scope recommendations

Anyone have any recommendations for scopes I should look at to put on my dpms .223? I bought this for my son to start shooting with and hopefully hunt a little with next year but I am really green to the ar world. I'm not looking for something to be able to shoot a mile with. Heck I'll most likely limit him for a good long while to 100 yards. Should I be looking at some regular old 3x9x40 type optic or are there scopes out there specifically designed for ar's? Ive got a nikon p223 on my AR .. Has the bdc for a 55gr round. I like it but its a little long, brother has the M223 and its a little clearer , but more expensive.
