    Bobcat leg traps

Anyone leg trap for Bobcats? Just started and could use any advice or information! Cool stories? Pics? Can't wait to check the traps everyday! Hoping for a cat in the morning!

Bobcats are a lot easier than coyotes. Big flashy sets. There should be an old thread on here from last year. Just search trapping.

What kind of traps are you running

A few different ones. Two new duke double coils. On leg trap that we found on the place a couple years ago. Very old. Had some critters bone in it when we found it.

Haven't tried it but I hear if you make a small dirt mound under a tree branch and hang something flashy (a cd or feather) from the branch just out of reach of the cat, they will get on top of the mound where your trap is set to try to get to said flashy object and SNAP, you've got yourself a bobcat. That's the theory anyway

I set mostly live traps and a few foothold. The best advice I can really give which I feel is the most important is trap where you know a bobcat is. Look for tracks and scat. If you have seen a bobcat in a certain area that's even better. Every once in a while you can set a trap in a random spot and hope to catch one but it's not as productive. I use urine and gland lure and a feather for visual.

Right now I have my traps around a rooster in a cage. I know there are some Bobcats around I just haven't seen them lately.

My kind of thinking was maybe even have another rooster 50 yards away so they might call back and forth...

Probably the coolest story I have about trapping cats is when I got my first two bobcats ever. I was about 16 or so and had just started trapping. I picked out a spot I thought looked good and checked my trap every day after school. I caught a opossum and a few raccoons and eventually I got a cat. It was a smaller cat but it didn't matter much to me. I dispatched it with my .22 pistol, leaned my 12 gauge against a tree and crawled through the thick brush to retrieve it. As soon as I opened the trap door and reached in and grabbed the cat I heard a growl to my right. I stood up and saw a big bobcat staring at me about 15 yards away. I got my pistol and aimed at the cat but held off thinking that I might wound it if I shot it with with the .22 so I decided to crawl back through and get my shotgun. As I knelt down and started my way back through the brush to get my shotgun I saw the cat disappear behind a wall of tumble weeds that had blown up against the trees. I grabbed my shotgun and began looking for the other bobcat but couldn't see it anywhere. So I turned my attention to the cat I had already shot and went back to get it,this time bringing the 12 gauge. I reached back in the trap and drug it out. I immediately heard the low growl of the other bobcat. I looked to my right and it was back in the same spot as before. I dropped the smaller cat and blasted the big one with #5 shot out of a 3 1/2" turkey load. Then the work started. Carrying both cats plus my shotgun all the way back to the truck wasn't easy but I was grinnin the whole way there.

I haven't done a European Mount on one but I do have a skull I need to do something with. It's just sitting on my dresser right now next to the big bobcat I talked about. I got a full body mount done on it. I've killed prettier and bigger bobcats since but it has the best story behind it for sure.

Im wanting to learn how to flesh them out for myself. Maybe try to sell some of them.

If you're wanting to sell them to a fur buyer it's best to sell them on the carcass. Alot of fur buyers prefer to buy them that way. You won't get any more or less for one on the carcass. As for skinning them out I'd just do a case skin on them just in case you decided to sell them later. You'll need to order a few things like a fleshing board, fleshing knife a tail stripper and some fur stretchers to start with. I use wire stretchers but some people prefer wood stretchers.

The best thing to do is call up your fur buyers and talk to them. They will tell you what they prefer.

Down here we only have one or two buyers and they both want them skinned... If you can put them up right you will be able to ship them to any of the fur auctions...
