    Chaparral hunt recap!!

Well nearly a week has went by I am just now giving a update on the Chap hunt. To say the least it was a great hunt despite the weather being in the 90's most days. I had two sets on ground blind and one tripod set. The ground blind set was ate up with hogs and javi's. This is where I took my javi on day 2. The tripod set I saw numerous deer one of which was a nice 8 with a unicorn point. On day 3 the unicorn made an appearance right at last light, too dark for a shot! The next morning my hopes where high on connecting on the unicorn but no such luck. I did see however a nice young 8 and two spikes. Well that evening I still had high hopes on seeing my deer. And again a littler 8 and 3 javi's. Ok now I am getting worried will I ever see the unicorn again? Well when the morning came I was super excited to get to the stand really foggy and nice and cool! About 7:30 a doe and yearling hit the sendero well this being next to the last day to hunt I decided to take her. Drew back and let an arrow fly at 35yrds. Perfect quartering shot she didn't make 60yrds. The Spitfire had done it's job! Well about 8:30 a nice 8, nubbin buck, and a spike roll out. I watch with anticipation hoping the unicorn will come out! Well about 5 mins later guess who shows up? The unicorn buck!! He makes his way into the sendero. At this point I am just trying to keep my cool, granted I am still pumped on my doe kill! Finally he gives me a perfect broadside shot and instead of ranging him I just try and judge the distance from my arrow that is laying in the sendero. Very bad decision especially when I had my range finder in reach. I draw back and let it go! Well you probably know the rest of the story! Right over his back a clean miss!! I could not believe the buck I had been hunting all week that I had just missed! I shot him at 30 and he was only at 22yrds. I guess that is bowhunting. But to say the least the Chap is an awesome place and hope I have the opportunity too get to hunt the place again! Also had the opportunity to meet some other TBH members that were great people!

Very cool, that is an awesome ranch! Too bad you missed but at least you got the experience. Are you allowed to bait at the Chap now?

            Sounds like a good time.

Do you have any pics of your tripod setup? I am curious how much cover you really need there with short tripods.

No sir I sure don't! But I wouldn't just set in in the open. The biggest buck shot there that week was shot out of a youth blind!

Congrats on the kills! Bummer that it didn't work out on the unicorn though. I've done the same thing before. Sucks every time.
