    Rain water collection systems

K so we are buying a house and land as a package and I was talking to one of my contractors and he mentioned rain water collecting as an alternative to a well. We are building in the Wimberley/San Marcos area and some of you might know it is rocky out there so wells tend to be typically higher over there, I would like to hear from the people who have these systems in place, the pros and cons we are looking at a 100% household use system. Has anybody had a system put in at that level and does anybody know any contractors that do installation of the whole system? I have been searching the interweb since I got home from work looking and reading about them and I am very interested.

Water is the basis of all life, and once it is gone, it’s gone. There are many steps each of us can take to be the catalyst for change we all inevitably need.

This may point you in the right direction.

My parents have one. They live in Dripping Springs. I believe they have 18,000 gallon capacity. Dad did it all himself. I know when they first moved out there they were **** about using water, dad would yell at us for leaving the water on while brushing teeth/ shaving ect, but now that they have had it a while and see how far it goes he has calmed down.

I don't think you will make it unless you put in a very large system, especially if we have a drought like we have just had. I have a 24,000 gallon system just for my gardens and it isn't really enough. Most people use more than 24,000 gallons in a month just for house hold use.

Figure 100 gal per day per person. Then you need to learn to be conservative.

1000 square ft of roof. 1/2 rain. Will give you 300 gal of water.

I think there will be times when you will be purchasing water and having it delivered.

WOW !!! 24000 gal a month........ I am going to my storage to dig out most of our water bills from LP&L, and try to get an average monthly consumption. I don't think we used even close to that there, but we'll see. I just put that to the calculator and that comes out to 800gals a day. The wife just handed me a bill from Sept. and we only used 6K gals, but last Sept we went through 9K gals for that month. Looking closely at my bill our average Winter consumption is 7K gals a month out west. HHHMMMMMM.......

I'm pretty tight with the water myself and while we lived in Liberty Hill, we used about 6,000 gallons a month. That would only be 4 months water with out rain. In 2011, we only had 2 6/10 of rain from January to Sept. 1st. I would have run out of water if I only used my rain water system.

While they are nice to supplement your well, I don't believe they will work for your only water supply when we are in drought conditions. Once you start putting the numbers to it, one thing is for certain, we all need to conserve water more. It's hard to imagine just how much we use when it's so easy to just turn the handle on the faucet.

                              I'm confused....
All the laws I've read about rain water categorizes it as "Surface Water".
And surface water belongs to the state of TX.

Only "Ground Water" which is dug for/drilled for and pumped out, belongs to the land owner...

But when I try and look it up, I find reputable contrasts on both sides.
1 says rain water belongs to the state. And the other says TX supports rain water harvesting.

                              ???
                              What am I missing?
