    Ar-15 question

What is a good performing off the shelf AR-15 to look at buying? Something I can have to play with, maybe do some add ons. Its not like I will be firing 1000's of rounds through it type deal.
I see Mossberg MMR and Windham Weaponry on sale at Academy....are they worth it?

    Smith & Wesson M&P 15 is a good start.

I have been eyeing the SW MP15 or the Ruger 15. I want a stock one with iron sights that shoots 5.56. These seem to be the best bet IMO. Look forward to more responses.

Probably find a better deal here:

            Been looking as well.

Ruger is tighter fitting and seems better built, but both seem to be from inspection and based on reviews very suitable.

Cabelas has the S&W going on sell tomorrow.

I don't know what your budget is, but I had this setup for a few years. I had fun shooting it and Rock River is a good company. I just sold it not too long ago to go towards my fund for a new bow. Check this AR-15 out.

                  The DPMS Sportical.

                  499.99

                  It goes bang. bang. bang.

                  Or the S&W MP 15.

Mossbergs are better guns than most folks think. Both my Mossberg ARs are good shooters and come with a free float tube and a grip you won't replace. You're already $$$ ahead of the add-on game. They neither have ( nor need ) forward assist or ejection port covers. ( When is the last time you needed the forward assist ? )Best bargain in ARs IMO. I bought the no-sight 20" bbl. models. One wears a Nikon, the other an ATN for after hours.

I have a bushmaster but I'd probably trade it for a rock river if I could. I have heard many good things about S&W though. A couple family members have one and they been very pleased.

I have a S&W M&P 15 and like it. It is the OR (optics ready) model. I think you can find the iron sights model for under $600 if you look around.

I'm leaning Rock River Varmint A4 with the TWO STAGE TRIGGER. Looking at the 24" barrel for some, reach out there, sub MOA performance. Work up some hand loads on paper, with a 1-8" barrel, make it touch 800 yards with the right pill and hand load tweak.

A bench or prone platform for pure shooting fun at range. Maybe even some competitive shooting too? Be fun to drive somewhere and shoot with some folks at some seriously long ranged targets.

I"m a Rock River Arms fan but.....most any AR-15 is going to be just fine, just find something in your budget. I'm not saying they are bad, but I'd probably steer clear of the carbon fiber lowers, simply because the resale value is worse and forged lowers are dirt cheap right now. Some of the "value" AR's like the S&W M&P's don't have a forward assist or a dust cover. Two things you will probably not use or need much if at all, but it's a way to save a few bucks for them.

I would suggest looking at Palmetto State Armory online. They have some of the best deals on AR's, you can pick and choose what you want and everyone raves about how great the quality is. You can easily get into one of their rifles for $500-$550.

                            Just my 2 cents!

This!!! Bought one for my daughter a couple weeks ago. Been a great gun. Talk about a tack driver. I put a Nikon P-223 3x9x40 on it. I was hitting 1/4" x 1/4" pieces of duct tape with it at 80 yards. Didn't even have to zero the scope. Crazy I know, but that's what went down.
