    Taking a deer head question

So I seen on a FB post a guy that came across a set of nice bucks that got locked up and ended up drowning in the river. Of course he takes a picture of the scene and cuts the heads off both deer and takes them home. My question is can he legally be in possession of the heads? I have been told by a warden as we stood over a really nice buck that had been road killed that I could not take the horns. Why would this be different? So what say the GS

Also interested, what if it is on your lease and has been dead for awhile

I have a big set that I found locked and contacted the Game Warden and sent some pictures and they gave me permission to take posession and issued a salvage tag. I still have them and there's no way to separate them and could only imagine how crappy a death that had to be.

From the info I've got in the past it would be illegal, just like taking a deer found on the highway.

You can do it, just get in touch with GW first. Whether you take them home or GW takes them home is up to them from what I've seen. My guess is if you and your GW are familiar with each other, and have a good relationship (as far as obeying game/hunting laws), he'd probably have no problem with you taking them home.

This guy probably should have at least called the GW.

It is illegal without having a GWs permission.
When given permission, the GW will usually take down your info and document it to cover your booty.

The roadkill is mentioned specifically in state law for sure. But found I think falls into a different category
