    Cold Weather?

Maybe I'm jumping the gun, or maybe I'm reading the forecast wrong, but I don't see any cold weather in the future for this winter. These mild temps have made hunting in central Texas extremely difficult, at least for me. Does anyone see any sort of possibility for cold weather this winter? I'm talking 3-4 days where the highs are only in the 30's. I see next Friday the low is 61 and the high is 79. That's miserable hunting weather if you ask me. With all this rain, mild temps, and forage I've had a rough season. I need sometime get the deer hungry and coming to the feeder.

I really don't recall it ever getting cold in December except for a few days.

To me I feel like it doesn't get cold until late January/February

Was in the low 20's before thanksgiving in the hill country. Been below 32(freezing) many mornings in the hill country. What part of the state are you referring to?

Technically Meteorlogical winter begins Dec 1. Having said that, be patient, you are rushing it a little. We are only a week into "winter". And while it's not atypical to have a big dump of cold air in the 1st week of December, we arent in that sort of pattern (and that's a good thing).

Cold is coming, but it's going to be the end of December. And we aren't going to have a bitter cold winter at that (again not that kind of pattern). But that does not mean we aren't going to have a cold winter. The ocean currents that steer cold have just begun to change their patterns.

So far cold has been in the west/NW US & Canada with a little filtering it's way down to us. That's largely due to the southern oscillation. This has been in what is measured as a positive index for much of the fall. A positive index keeps colder air to our west. This just within the last week or so swung to a negative index and that pushes cold air further east.

We won't have a bitter cold winter but conditions look good for continued moisture and moderately cold air.

Even better news is that we could see come closed low systems. These systems essentially generate their own cold core and don't need the aid of polar/Canadian air. These systems really get their act together over the 4 corners area and swing down south as they skip along the southern jet stream. We have seen several systems of this nature already swirl up over the 4 corners, but the southern jet has been too far north for us to get a good one & the atmosphere as a whole hadn't cooled enough.

Look for storms at the end of Dec all the way through feb. until then, enjoy the short sleeves weather. I saw mid to upper 70's for us (Lubbock) at the end of this week.

That's probably way more than y'all wanted to know- sorry it was long winded

December 22nd is first day of winter but I know what you are saying. Although I'm not complaining about the beautiful extremely nice days we have been having.

Actually that was an excellent explanation. Thanks for the knowledgeable response.
