When I moved to Hallsville 7 months ago We had Hughes net come out and set up a High speed internet dish. after struggling with them for 6 months about how slow it was they convinced me to up grade the dish and service to a pro plus package getting 1.5 megs of service. When I contacted them yesturday and told them I was only getting 286k down and 145 up they hooked me up with their tech support after 4 hours of trying to talk to some one who could neither speak or under stand English I asked to get back to Sales. When I told them I wanted to cancel the service she said they would charge my card $460.00 for a cancelation fee. I told her I was not even getting 1/4 of the speed they advertised , She said I should have read the fine print. They state UP TO 1.5 meg and my 286k was just my tuff luck.

oh my.... that stinks.
I know a guy who had a salesman tell him about the small print thing in person trying to return a product after a free "trial". This particular gentleman (a large feller by the way) reached across the counter jerked the sales kid over it held him with his feet off the floor and pushed the phone away. After telling the little smart mouth that even if he called the cops he would be a smear on the floor by the time they got there he suddenly realized that he was in a bad situation and that his wife was upset. He promptly set the person down and exited the store. Not a good example, and not something I'm promoting, but I'm sure we've all wished in our heads we could do that when they say.... "Sir did you read the fine print?"

Read your agreement. They probably have some type of "Service Level Agreement" (SLA). If so, read it and understand it. Than start creating issues so the SLA will come into effect. Also, keep calling the support department until you become a thorn in their side and they might ask you to leave.
Second choice: Cancel the credit they have on file than disconnect your service. They might try to sue you but most companies (mine included) won't bother going to court over a few hundred dollars.

Gateway wouldn't sell me a computer now if I promised to never call customer support again.

Buff I feel for you thats a lot of money invested to get bad service.
Do you have a wireless or regualar modem. I know the phone at my house kills my speed its more of a wireless issue than a Hughs net issue. I have had good luck with them excpt when I hit the fair service agreement which then they slow me down.
