Yesterday evening around 6:40 pm my wife, son and I was traveling to Spicewood, TX to see her family for Thanksgiving when I witnessed the most horrible things I had ever see in my life. I was traveling East bound on Hwy 71 coming into Bee Caves just before FM 620, Hwy 71 in that area does not have a median between the East and West bound lanes, but only a turn lane. As I'm coming up to the light I see a guy walking in the West bound lane and then I see a white truck hit him and throw in straight up in the air. I immediately shout out Holy F*** that guy was just hit buy a truck. I immediately turned my truck around to stop and render aid. Myself and two other guys found the male laying face down in the middle of the road, he was breathing, but not very well.
My wife is on the phone with 911 giving them our location and then she hands me the phone so I can give the dispatcher the condition of the victim. The guy was laying face down, breathing, but we did not want to move him for fear of injuring him more, you could tell his arm was crushed in several places along with his leg and hip and he also had severe internal injuries. EMS showed up about 5 minutes later and just as they pulled up the victim stopped breathing, EMS started CPR immediately but they were not able to revive him.
I found out later that one of the guys that was initially on the seen with me was the victims brother. Apparently they had been leaving HEB and when the came out of HEB his cell phone flew out of the truck or slide off the truck into the West bound lane of Hwy 71. They had pulled over and the brother went to retrieve the cell phone while traffic was still moving. This kid was only 24 years old and had lost his life for what? A stupid cell phone cell!
I just want to say to everyone on TBH to please be careful traveling this holiday weekend and please don't text and drive or do anything stupid with a cell phone. I know how important everyone thinks their cell phone is to them, me included, but a cell phone is replaceable and it is not worth loosing your's or anyone else's life over. It's a material object and it can be replaced, you cannot! I'm having a hard time getting the image of this young man being hit by this truck. This whole ordeal has made me realize how short life really is and realize what is really important in life. Please be safe and have a Happy Thanksgiving!
