I'll start off by saying that this is my cousin, not me. But I don't think I've ever been as elated about a deer being taken.
We have some family land up in the panhandle that is not much more than cotton farm with some CRP on it. But the muledeer seem to love it. This was year number 7 we've hunted this place. The first several years is was an absolute struggle to even see a deer, much less a buck, even harder to see one in rifle range. Two years ago I was lucky enough to connect on a 140s mulie-my avatar. (Look up my old posts, I've posted some big ones we had camera, but never saw)
Fast forward to Saturday morning, I was driving through the place glassing the CRP and happen to look out in the cotton field and see a whole **** herd of deer (with one big buck) about 100 yards out. They start hauling across the cotton field with me chasing. I finally get to within 200 yards of them and try to get a shot using an irrigation system as a rest. I had the crosshairs on him, but with the wind blowing 30-40mph there was no way I'd take the shot and risk wounding him. The deer spooked and go on to a neighboring property.
Over the next three days my cousin and I would catch glimpses of him in cotton fields and CRP, but his harem of doe's would always nail us and we couldn't make a stalk. Yesterday morning I watched from a mile away as the herd of doe's walked within 50 yards of my cousin, but the buck once again bedded down in the cotton field and eluded us. You wouldn't think an animal that big can absolutely dissapear in a cotton field, but they do!
I had to leave yesterday, so it was all his. This morning was foggy and he saw a few doe's in the CRP and was able to make a stalk. All the doe's spooked, and what do you know the buck stood up at 30 yards in all his glory. My cousin air balled the first shot and dropped him dead on the second shot. This was his first deer ever!! He got him a good one. The best part is that his 12 year old son was with him and saw the whole thing. I'm incredibly happy for him.
