Dead buck found in my feedpen.....by the water.

I had not been able to get back to my lease since the opener till this past weekend and this is what I found... Talk about a nasty mess. I have removed goats and other deer from fences/pens before but this was a gray creamy smelly mess that beat all. I have a strong stomach and do not gag but this dude made me and my buddy gag... twice!.. when the smell hit our nostrils.. The video would have been priceless.

Anyway, I went through my pics quickly and told everybody I did not have pics of him passing through....but after going through again last night I had some dark pics I lightened and sure enough it was him on 10/11. He seems hunched over with his mouth open in both pics. I don't see any wounds on this side, nor do I see any dripping blood or stomach matter on his belly that you would think might be visible. Unfortunately he also laid with this side up and the backside is no more so we'll never know if he was shot unless the neighbors say they are missing one. Buzzards appeared on 10/13 so he must have laid up at the water and died. I am 150 yards from the neighbor's fence with a wall of mesquites, oaks and cedar between us. In the pics, he would have been coming from the direction of the fence line but I have no proof that he actually did. We put a call into the neighbor and he was going to ask his hunters. Nobody has claimed it as of yet.

Here is an earlier pic. I think he was 6.5 years old and it looks like he had lost some weight so I guess he could have gotten sick as well or got his arse whipped by another deer. It was a bummer because he would have made a nice management deer for one of the kids or a nice sausage deer. Just a weird disappointing deal all the way around.

Hate to see them go like that. You needed to wear a face mask and chew doublemint gum. Breath through your mouth.

Did you check the feed pen fence for any damage. The reason I ask is looking at his one back leg it looks like he might have got hung in the fence and maybe by the time he go loose he was just to exhausted to recover. Bummer he died.

Good point, he may not be stepping, rather holding it up.

I watched him and another mature 8 point at 20 yards opening weekend and they seemed just fine. I wish I would have known, because I would have saved him from having to do that..

I think that deer got sick. He sure seems to have dropped a fair amount of weight from the velvet pictures.

Yes....first thing I looked at since most of the few deer we have had die around the pens do that. Nothing looked out of the ordinary. No signs of a struggle in the dirt or hair/blood on the fence etc.
