Before & After the shot... deer's reaction to an arrow.

This is a buck my son tried to shoot. I was videoing the shot and captured a couple still pix from before the shot and after.

As you can see, deer are quite quick in their reaction. it was a clean miss.

Too bad he missed. Good buck. Those suckers sure are quick.
He had a good shot angle.

As this is my first season to bow hunt, you bring up a good point for a newbie. I've seen many of the forum videos now and don't have a good feel if/when they will drop like that. Is their dropping a function of their comfort level with their surroundings? And the aiming low part - would a blind to feeder distance of 7 yards be critical for a different aim point or take a standard aim point from ground level?

It sucks to have a miss but I would not say it was the hunters fault on this one. Deer have great reflexes when it comes to danger.

I had one 2 years ago quartered left and towards me, but when I shot the arrow went center of the chest when she turned.

Man, that is kinda like seeing into the future if you ask me

I just aim for the arm pit, if they drop and roll, most likely you will still hit lung. But as far as knowing when they will do it, I don't think there is a way to tell. I have noticed that the deer that seem the most jumpy are the ones that have done this to me, but it is a crap shoot and I am in no way and expert.

                    M38A1,

the deer drop like that to load their leg muscles to scadaddle out of there.

they react to the sound of the arrow being released.

They seem to be "more" on edge around feeders.

His bow was not the fastest at the time. So... the deer had some time to react.

                    Tracker,

in reviewing the video... his shot was a tad high to begin with... a little nervous, he was.

i'd name that buck Agent Smith....as in from the Matrix, because that is some dodge right there. He zigged when he should have, well, zigged. Better luck next time.

What I also find interesting is the second deer in the background. Look at it's reaction as well - significant dropping.

Yeah, they all will pretty much react to the shot noise & and arrow skimming by.

Great pics. I'm sure your son isn't enjoying them. Remind him that we wll have deer react to the shot. If he isn't missing then he isn't shooting enough. Good luck to him in the rest of the season.
