Blue Lacy vs GSP vs Mutt for my next pup

Im looking for a little insight on my next dog. I have done a lot of research on these dogs on here as well as other sites, but I wanted to get actual owner experience if possible. But, everyone feel free to add their experiences with these dogs. I also wanted to let you know what this dog will be primarily intended for.

So I just recently lost Roxi my black mouth cur of 11 years a few months ago. I got her my first year in college, so we basically grew up together. I was devastated and thought "I will never get another dog again!" Well come to find out...A boy still needs his dog. So, I am going to start looking over the next few months for my new companion.

I grew up hunting/fishing but when i moved to college I was away from my family and working/going to school. SO, trips were few and far between. Once i graduated and got back into it, my dog was just not really used to it. She was extremely gun shy and i didnt have her kennel trained anymore.(because she was the perfect dog and didnt need to be kenneled to not tear stuff up) I tried to bring her to the lease with me and on the boat and she just never took to it. She would always seem scared/nervous so I stopped bringing her.

My next dog I want to go EVERYWHERE with me. As well as be my hunting partner. Heres a little backround on my lifestyle which might help determine which dog you wthink would be right for me:

I live in Spring, TX which is a surburb. I do not have big property for the dog to roam. The wife and I both work full time and are gone 10-11 hours out of the day. I have a neighbor across the street who has agreed to come over once a day during the first few weeks/months to let the puppy out. I Hunt and Fish year round. I primarily hunt Pigs and deer on my lease and intend to teach the dog to blood trail. I also do 2-3 dove hunts and 2-3 duck hunts randomly and it would be nice to have the dog as a retriever as well. Not sure I can keep a dog trained to retrieve with that few amount of hunts per year, but Im thinking of getting a dove/duck lease and going more to work the dog. I also take my boat up to conroe after work a few times a month and on the weekends just to cruise around and i want to be able to bring the dog. I primarily fish the coast for Saltwater species though. The wife and I are trying to have a baby as well so we need something that will be good around children.

    So my top interests are:
    Blood Tracking/Shed hunting
    Retrieving Dove/Ducks
Not too aggressive around children/other dogs

So, I have decided between 3 dogs:

    GSP:
Ive always said this would be my next dog. I really want the liver/roan color female. They say they kennel well and are good around children/other dogs. The only downside for me is the size. I would prefer something in the 35-40lb range. But this isnt a huge issue as they are only abt 10lbs heavier. I relaize a lab would probably be best suited for my needs but I dont want that big of a dog. I realize GSPs are pointers and more upland dogs, but I would like to train it to retrieve Dove/Ducks/bloodtrail

    Blue Lacy:
Obviously being a bowhunter Ive heard really good things about them and being the State dog of Texas is awesome. The size is more suited for what I want. Dont know if they would retrieve well, but my primary concern is blood trailing. The main downside i see about them is actually how they would fit my lifestyle. I hear they are super intense and sort of protective(which can mean aggressive) as well as needing a full-time job and A LOT more attention/work than i think i would be able to provide on a DAILY basis.

    Mutt:
I got my black mouth cur mix from the shelter and she was a great dog and had no health issues until the last 2 months when she contracted Lymphoma. My parents had a springer spaniel that had so many issues that it has kind of scared me from getting a pure bred dog. Ive seen on here that you can pretty much train any dog to blood trail. So, if i just didnt care about the retrieving part i dont think a mutt would be out of the question. Not to mention a heck of a lot cheaper lol

of listed, I can only speak for the lacy. mine is stubborn, stubborn, and more stubborn, but, shes also only 10 weeks old. She is very smart and very attached to us. She will sit by me and I will throw her play duck as far as I can. While its in the air, ill yell "bang" as loud as I can. She doesn't flinch. She'll fetch that duck, bring it back, release it, and sit right back down by me. She'll sit on command. She is an absolute sweetheart of a pup. I know she will do good things for us.

But. She's very mouthy. I know this is more of just being a pup thing. She will chew on anything. And she's very, very attached. She wants nothing more than for us to be around and she severely whines and cries when we leave.

She loves riding in the truck and goes with me wherever I go when I leave.

Tough one! I own Lacy dogs, catahoulas, plot hound, American pit bull terrier, AB/ Great Dane cross. I believe if I was in your shoes in town I would go with the catahoulas. Not my favorite dog I own, but will get the job done for what you want and is a little less "full speed" than the Lacy.

Get a "rescue" dog............... You both will be happy. I got a Border Collie. Couldn`t be HAPPIER!

They do like exercise though and maybe living in a crate is not the ideal solution . Lucky for me, she has the run of the house.

          No problems what so ever.

Some really great dogs (partners) available from rescue shelters.

I have a catahoula and a weimaraner. Both are great around children and really loyal, the catahoula is a great blood trailer and the weimaraner is a great bird dog. Both do well in kennels on the road, oh and they think they are lap dogs. Good luck with your search!

I just got a 5 month old Blue Lacy female. She had never been away from her kennel pen and litter mates until I picked her up and headed for the lease where we spent a week together. At first she was shy but within 2 days learned her new name and sticks to me like glue. She is really learning commands quick. Uses her nose constantly and loves deer legs and deer hide. Best part is she sleeps all night and hasn't messed or peed in the house one time. After the first 4 days she became sort of possessive of me and doesn't like other dogs to get too close to me or touch me. She is a snuggler and a sweet heart other wise. She plays and gets along with our other dogs just fine except when she is in my lap and then don't touch her daddy. Her blood training with drags will begin this weekend. It's true that Lacy dogs have their own unique personality.

Your work schedule and lifestyle would not be very conducive to a Lacy. Unless you can take it to work with you or run several miles a day after work.

Yea its kinda of seeming like the lacy might be a little too intense for my current situation. My BMC mix was supper possessive too and once i graduated from college i stopped taking her to dog parks as much and socializing her so she literally wanted to KILL every dog that got within 50 ft of me. She was sweetheart around people tho.

I didnt want to make it sound like it would live in a kennel. I mostly will kennel train it as a pup to prevent tearing up the house and having to clean up massive piles of poop and clean up pee every day when i get home lol. As soon as my BMC mix was trained i stopped kenneling her so if i ever tried to later on in life she would freak out and hurt herself trying to get out. I just want my next dog to be able to be kenneled throughout its life at times when i leave her in the camper at the lease or outside the camper without it destroying everything or running away.

I can only provide an opinion on the GSP, as I have a 2.5 year old female. I've always had labs so this was a big jump for me, but one that I don't regret. She's super smart, loyal, and great around children. She points my quail, and retrieves my quail, doves, and ducks. I've tried her on deer blood once or twice, but she wouldn't stop looking in the air long enough to trail the blood. She has TONS of energy, but listens well enough to keep fairly calm in the house. My wife & I are gone 10-12 hours a day, which sucks for my pup, but she handles it great. She loves her kennel, and loves to snuggle as much as she does run.

BMC/lab mix. Tracks deer/hogs, retrieves dove and ducks. Great dog with tons of drive and aims to please. She is in my avatar.

Thanks. yea im kind of leaning more towards the GSP or another Rescue. Im not 100% sure that i could Work a retriever enough unless i got on a dove/duck lease next year. I already have way too many hobbies. May just end up getting a rescue and training it to blood trail/shed hunt. Most importantly I want a dog that is going to be comfortable going with me on all my hunting excursions. That being said, it is hard to find a puppy at a shelter and I would be afraid to adopt a dog that is going to be scared of its own shadow for the rest of its life. I really would like to start them as young as possible in the outdoors.

I have a Lacy male that is a year and a half old. On his way to being an amazing tracking dog. But very intense dog. Absolutely great with my family, but not so much with anyone else. Not sure he cares about attention but doi think about leaving without him at your side. We also have a Catahoula that sound exactly like what you are looking for, good working dog but sleeps with the kids every night.
