If you own a VW TDI

Be sure to replace the High pressure fuel pump or trade in your car before the fuel pump goes out. Mine went out last week in Johnson City TN. $6300 to repair. I had 191000 miles on it so I bought a Toyota Corolla instead. I was shocked that a fuel pump going out would do that much damage.

Damage from a fuel pump going out? What type of damage does this failure cause? That is crazy money for a repair!!

Sorry man. I know the feeling. When I was faced with a $4K repair bill on mine (cracked DPF) I just traded it in on a Rav4. So I'm even more glad I traded my TDI in now!

More proof that if things sound too good to be true, they probably are.

      Happy with my Toyotas!

Metal shavings throughout fuel system and into cylinders. Unbelievable! Seems like a bad design to me.

This is not a common failure on the TDI engines. Sorry for your bad luck. Most common failure is the timing belt breaking and valves knocking holes in the top of pistons. It gets a bit expensive replacing the belt every 100,000 miles. I know of one TDI that belongs to a VW service manager that was opened up at 500,000 miles just to see what the internals looked like. There was no appreciable wear so they put on new gaskets and buttoned it up.

We are on our second VW diesel and really like the power. The interiors suck as the headliner and door panel cloth comes loose and sags after a few years in the Texas heat. The steering wheel covering wears through and becomes rough where you grip the wheel. They are difficult to work on and parts are crazy expensive. As a guy at O'reilly Auto Parts said, " Volkswagens have ther good advantages and bad advantages". We will probably go with a Toyota or Honda gasser if this darn thing will ever die.

All TDI owners NEED to be members at tdiclub.com

Most repairs can be done by decent shadetree mechanics ... tdiclub is the place to find out how to do them ... or to find a TDI repair guru to take your car for much more reasonable repair costs.

I was a member there as soon as I bought my TDI. I was excited to find there was so much help available, but also learned that not all the "gurus" are honest, decent people to deal with.

Post-2008 TDI's do have some amazing technology and can do some impressive things. But they are an expensive car to own. I'll just leave it at that.

Sorry to hear that. I had a 2002 Jetta and at that time I had the very good fortune to live in an area (New England) that had a very active group of enthusiasts who would go out of their way to help each other out.

I totaled my Jetta about 4 years ago and bought a pickup as it fit my lifestyle better now.

I think you could probably create one of those internet laws ... when an online forum gets too big it becomes less like a family. Think of comparing TBH with AT. TDIClub used to be like that compared to VW Vortex. Perhaps they crossed that threshold?

If my TDI was an '02, I'd probably still have it.

World of difference between the old (and good) ones and the newer ones.
