When you look at the costs
    lease fee
    protein
    corn
fuel to drive to the lease ( it is 9 hours each way)
one weekend a month of your time to be sure everything is running

You can go stay at a nice ranch and kill a dandy buck for what you have invested

If I was retired and had lots of time on my hands it would be a different goal as I would have lots of free time to kill
I feel the same way Marty..

The fact that you have 6 kids tells me that you need a lease or something to get you out of the house a lot!

I couldn't stand not having a lease! I work shift work and my kids are all grown up so I don't have that restriction to deal with. I spend lots of time at the lease, all year long so I usually get my money's worth out of it. And on top of that, my fiance loves to be there and even suggested spending Valentine's weekend out there!

Again, I don't have kids at home so I know that complicates the matter.

I would recommend spending a little more money of a better lease thats a little more target rich and try that for a couple years!

I skip the lease and head out west. You can do lots of good public land hunts for cheap once you build a few points. Elk/mule deer>whitetail

Hadn't really looked into it before until this year but there are some great whitetail hunts to be had for dirt cheap as well on public land in any direction whether it is north, east, or west. I have been messing around in Nebraska this year and it has been awesome and seen several bucks and dang near shot several of them spot and stalking that would have ran 2000+$ down in Texas.

I've become willing to accept hunting a lease with a marginal deer herd just to have a place to go stomp around in the country whenever I feel like it.

This is EXACTLY what I am looking for right now in the North Texas area.. I want my boys out in the sticks as much as possible and we will work for our spot!
