    Jeep Questions

My son just turned 16 and he really wants a Jeep as his first vehicle. Not just any Jeep. Needs to be lifted, nice wheels, big tires, etc. We've been shopping used Jeeps for a while online and I have a pretty solid handle on value/price for given models, miles, and accessories. I've never owned a Jeep before or bought a used vehicle, for that matter.

My question for the green screen: Are there any particular items/things to look out for specific to a Jeep that I should be paying attention to? We drove one today with big tires and a 4" suspension lift. Liked it a lot, but it is a bit of a rough ride and has road noise I'd expect from aggressive AT tires. I presume all Jeeps with a suspension lift would be a bit rough, but I don't have any reference to compare to. If you are a Jeep person, any insight would be helpful to our decision making process. Thanks in advance.

Every jeep I've rode in was rough. Even the non lifted ones. They have a lot of road noise as well. Those are just things that come with a jeep. Check the frame to make sure there's not any bad rust. That happens a lot of the ones that have been off roared a lot.

That's an awesome Jeep. Right year model and miles, but yours is so tricked out it puts it out of my price range. Amazing Jeep though. I'm sure you'll get it sold.

I have a 2003 TJ Rubicon with enough lift to run 32" BFG all terrains. Seems to run smoother, and quieter than other tire brands I've run. Still not very quiet though. A hard top will help with noise, and a great option for cooler temps. In my opinion there aren't many vehicles out there that are more capable off-road, or more fun than the Jeep. I love mine!

I'll keep the tire advice in mind when the time comes. Sounds like I should expect to not find one that runs smooth. I figured that would be the case and am fine with that, but wanted to make sure that it's normal for them to be fairly rough. Is there anything else specific I should check out looking at used Jeeps?

With a 16 year old, i get a mechanic to check for the likelihood of getting death wobble anytime soon. Fix-wise it's not a big issue, but it can be scary for someone who doesn't know how to control it. And if you find one with the 4.0, check the cooling system, maybe go ahead snd replace the t stat and flush. Otherwise they are solid. Rough, yes, but that's partnof the jeep appeal. And loud because its a tim can without all the noise dampening stuff every other car has

Lifted Jeeps can be troublesome so I would have a good Jeep mechanic check it out completely. I bought my son a Jeep at 16. We put a 2" lift on it and he liked it. When he graduated HS last spring he told me he wanted a different car for college. Stated rough ride and gas mileage as his reasons. He now is perfectly happy in a Hyundai. YMMV
