    What's wrong with my basil?

Went to cut some basil just now and saw this. Pictures should explain themselves. Hadn't looked at it in a few days. Thought insect at first until I saw the black spots and the thin clear film left over some holes. So what's gotten my basil, and is it safe to eat if I cut around the bad spots?

    Creeping crud?

Maybe mites or some little bastage.

Good to eat if I pinch off the bad spots? Anything simple I can do to get rid of them? Thanks gents

Some kind of critter is getting to it. You can see that they're scraping off the top layer, leaving it clear. Over time, the clear part dies and turns black. I don't know what's doing it. Go check it at night. You might be able to see something, and then come up with a plan of attack. There should be no problem eating around the damaged part.
