my favorite niece is a senior at a small college in lexington, Ky. She went on a full ride soccer scholarship.
3 years ago she met the nicest young man named Devon. Devon came to be part of our family and it was obvious to all of us that they were in it for the long haul and we all expected them to be married after she graduated this spring.
2 days ago Devon was supposed to go to work but bad weather in Louisville had them shut down. Devon had been wanting to buy a gun he'd had his eye on so he did it that day since he was off of work anyway. when he got home he apparently went to going through the gun, cycling the action etc and apparently loaded a live round. his roommate asked to see it and somehow mistakenly pulled the trigger. Devon was shot through the chest and died almost immediately.
My Niece is struggling obviously, The life she thought she'd have is gone and she's left to gather up the pieces and try to make sense out of senseless tragedy.
Hunting season is here-please, please remember the basics of firearm safety. YOU are not immune and you don't have to be the careless one in order to be the victim.
1. every firearm is loaded-even if it isn't
2. never point a weapon (loaded or otherwise-see#1) at anything you don't intend to destroy.
please keep my niece Sara in your thoughts and also Devon's roommate-i can only imagine the hell he's going through as well.
My heart is breaking for her.
