    Tripod Height??

I'm going to build a tripod specifically for hunting a WMA up here in OK. It reminds me a lot of central west Texas, or south Texas - lots of mesquites and cactus, with some draws and such. I've already looked at the DIY section and have an idea. The question I have is, how tall do I need to make it? For those of you that hunt mesquites a lot - not big bull mesquites - what do you prefer? I'm thinking 8' legs - basically to the bottom of the seat. It may be a little tall for some places, but should work? I think 10' would be too tall. 6' might work well, but there would be some places where it might be a little short. I can always take a little off if I need to.

    Thanks,
    skooter

How abut a 6-footer with one set of 2' extensions and another set of 4' extensions? Max flexibility there.

Not a bad idea, but it would be a little more involved. I'll have to have a think on that.

If you build your legs out of square tubing, it's not hard at all. Just slip a sleeve of the next size tubing over the end of the leg and weld it. Voila ! You can then have any length extensions you want as long as they don't compromise strength. Got two like this myself. Good idea dustoffer !

We hunt in Quanah on 640 acres and only have 1 tree that is large enough to put a treestand in. We have several tripods that the seat is about 5 ft off the ground. They are perfect for the scrub mesquites you are talking about. I shot a doe out of one 2 weekends ago. They were within 15 ft of me for 10-15 minutes and had no idea i was there. Generally not what you think of height wise when discussing tripods but anything much taller and we are above the the thickest part of the brush/trees on our property.

The one I use in south Texas is about 6 to the seat. Works good

Friend used a 6' stepladder too, with the swivel seat on top. lightweight and easy to transport too.

Thanks all. I think I will go with 6' for the hunt next week. At the end of season, I'll bring it home and make the adjustments to add "slip joints". The legs will be made from 1-1/4" EMT conduit, so I can use 1" for the adjustment pieces.
