As long as I been killing deer I should know this but I don't. Does anybody know or have knowledge if there is a difference in taste between a lactating doe and a barren non-lactating doe?

I've you've shot enough does, some of them are bound to be lactating. Most people don't check. Our MLD lease requires that we check.

If I was guessing most of the doe thT are harvested are lactating. Not sure statewide. I was able to participate in helping a deer reduction in the 90s on two different ranches owned by same family. One post oak one hill country. I think it was A&M that was doing it. I think close to 250 a deer killed in November. It was somewhere in the high 70% range that was

Ya'll realize that a lactating doe just means that she successfully raised her young...Last edited by Death from Above; 10-24-2015, 12:20 PM.

This time of year the only does that are not lactating or still producing some milk and still have a bag are the ones who lost their fawns very early on or who are barren to begin with. There are virtually no fawns this time of year. This years' babies are now yearlings if they have no spots.
We have a doe quota to meet on my lease so I shoot the oldest fattest one I can get lined up for a shot. So far all it has done is to increase the number of does I see. This year is only the second time I have ever killed a non-lactating or dry doe and she seemed to be a little fatter than the others.
