I coach my son's Flag Football team, and have for the past year starting in Kindergarten, fall and spring season and now we're in fall 1st grade. My son is not the fastest kid on the team, he's probably the 2nd, maybe 3rd fastest kid on the team but he understands the game and angles.
Over the past three weeks his "vision" for the game has dramatically improved, it's as if a light switch was turned on. He's avg. 2 TD's a game and typically has 12 or more "tackles" (pulled flags) each game. This morning was not a high scoring game but he accounted for 1 TD, a safety, 2 "tackles" for a loss 1 deflected pass and 11 other "tackles". Last week he had 2 TD's and 15 tackles. He's been a machine. He is involved in every play in someway, he see's the play develop and is able to get himself in the right position to make a play almost every single time.
Wyatt has given up 1 TD this season on his side of the field, he's learned to move to the ball using angles and is consistently stopping big plays from breaking by taking the right line. Last week a kid juked him out of his shoes and Wyatt slipped, the runner cut back the other way, Wyatt caught him 15 yards down field and saved a TD, it wasn't because he was faster he just took the right angle. He's not been afraid to run into a mess of players to go for a flag, he has lunged for the flag numerous times even taking a shoe to the face twice and still gets up excited about pulling the ball carriers flag. There have been a few times where he's gotten up from a collision and when other players want to go to the sideline he's right back in the huddle.
As a coach it's exciting to see a young kid "get it" and as a Dad, it makes your heart swell with pride to see your son not only do well at something he loves but give it everything he has.
Thanks for letting me brag on my boy a little!
